Richard served as an Ensign with the KY troops in the War of 1812. He was a Major General of Missouri troops in the Black Hawk War. He was a Colonel of First Missouri Volunteers. Richard moved to MO. in 1816. In order to help the family, Thomas Benton, a close friend of Richards persuaded President Van Buren to appoint Ann Hawkins Gentry as Postmistress of Columbia to succeed her husband. He was one of the founders and incorporators of Columbia He was a State Senator. He was a Postmaster of Columbia. In 1841, the General Assembly passed an act establishing Gentry Co. in the Northwest part of the State of Missouri in honor of Col. Richard Gentry.Richard married Nancy Ann Hawkins on 13 Feb 1810 in Madison, Ky. Nancy was born in 1792 in Madison, Ky.
Ann Hawkins was a woman of strong character and of a dignified and distinguished appearance and bearing. She was very patriotic. A flag committee consisting of Analyza Gentry, Ann Todd, Dorothy Gentry, and Jane Gentry among others sewed a silk flag for the Missouri Volunteers which now hangs in the State Museum in Jefferson City, MO. Some ladies expressed sympathy for her on account of her being a soldier's wife and she replied that she would rather be a brave soldier's widow than a coward's wife. The flag was presented to Ann Hawkins Gentry by the surviving officers of the Regiment. It reads: First Regiment of Missouri Volunteers, Gird, Gird, for the Conflict, Our banner wave high! For our country we live, For our country we die! Ann Hawkins Gentry was appointed Postmistress of Columbia by President Van Buren to succeed her husband who had had the job since 1830.Richard and Nancy had the following children:
