SHELTON FAMLIES OF McMINN CO. TENNSSEE, James Shelton.

Duck Shelton, said to be son of Roderick by Mary Franklin, a Cherokee Indian girl, was born about 1798. Duck Shelton was said to have been supported and cared for by Roderick. Records show that he married and had a daughter, Mahalia Shelton, who married a Union soldier, Alexander Griffin. Duck Shelton reportedly had a silver mine which he worked, and from the silver he produced minted coins. The silver being of a high grade of purity, the coins had a higher silver content than those frm the Philadelphia mint. In 1848 he was found guilty in a Yancey County court of making and passing counterfit money and was sentenced to have 30 lashes to be administered by the Sheriff. Traditionally, the mine was so well hidden that it has not been found to this day. William Bud Shelton is said to have had the silver molds supposed to have been used by Duck in minting his silver coins. Duck Shelton died in 1860.

William married Nancy Bowman, daughter of Jacob Bowman and Margaret Johnson, on 13 Aug 1818 in , , Greene, North Carolina. Their sealing was submitted. Nancy was born about 1802 in NC. She died after 1850 in Duck's Mill Br, Shelton Laurel, Madison Co, NC.

They had the following children:

+ 4 M i Russell (Hugh) Franklin was born on 12 Oct 1824 and died on 9 Jun 1864.
  5 F ii Mahalia Shelton.
        Mahalia married Alexander Griffin.

3. George Washington "Rock" Franklin (Mary Aka Glumdalclitch ) was born about 1801 in NC. He died after 1870 in Shelton Laural C, Madison Co., NC.

The Russell FRANKLIN line connects back at Mary FRANKLIN/Glumdalclitch. One of her sons was William FRANKLIN/Duckworth SHELTON whose father was Roderick SHELTON, the other was George Washington "Rock" FRANKLIN, father unknown.
These half-brothers married sisters, Nancy and Elizabeth "Betty" BOWMAN, and that may be where some of the confusion originated.

I can't believe I am sitting here writing this at 2:00am, but now that I'm retired the genealogy bug has gotten really bad. What really caught my eye was the Rock Franklin. My great grandfather, one of his sons and my youngest uncle were all "Rock Franklin Halls" originating in Madison County, NC and ending up in Roane, Loudon, and Anderson County, TN. My ggrandfather was the infamous Alexander Shelton of Shelton Laurel and Rhoda Hall. My brother and I grew up in Oak Ridge; he still lives in Claxton, and I in High Point, NC. If he hasn't already been in touch with you, he may be calling. I sent your "Descendants of Mary Aka Glumdalclitch Franklin to him and a cousin in Texas. We have been to Shelton Laurel and talked to Rena Shelton, but I never got the Indian connection. Have you traced the "Hall" connection? I didn't see it mentioned on your list of family names. It may add a whole new dimension.

Hello,
My name is Penny Johnson and I am trying to research anything on what would be my great great grandmother Druzilla Franklin. If you would like to add anything from her decendants from her son John Hensley, please contact me. Thank you.

Subject: RE: Cicero Cutshall line

Joe,
I maintain a very informal list of online Cutshall/Cutshaw cousins that Gypsy or Kathy might want to join in on. It is basically a personal distribution list that I send emails to the group, when any Cutshall/Cutshaw news comes around, obits and such. Will be glad to send her an invitation to join if she would like. Just send me their addresses. Here is a descendant report for Cicero's father, Elbert Decatur's line as I have it.
Would appreciate any corrections/additions if any are to be made. LEt me know what else you need. Like I said, can do a little at a time.
I have looked for Mary/Glumdalaclith on the Indian rolls, but to no avail.
I am certain she was Indian. The "Indian Look" even passed down from her son George to his daughter Martha Franklin and on to Tennessee Tweed. I have a picture of Tennessee and if she isn't at least 1/4 Indian then I would by very surprised. Even with that Irish Tweed blood, gg grandma Tennessee looked full-blooded Indian.
