Chuck Olsen - OlsonCFam@compuserve.comFrom "Burkhart Genealogy" - Ina Fields - McClung Historical Collection The many activities in which PETE BURKHART, engaged during his useful life have justified frequent reference to him as a successful man, a splendid Chruch leader, outstanding man of Knox County, a prominent planter, and Carpenter by trade.
On Sunday Morning, if Peter Burkhart should happen to be late for sunday school, they would say "We can't begin Sunday School until, Uncle Peter get's here." (Told me by Wiley Murdock Burkhart)
Peter Burkhardt, came to Knox County in the early part of 1800. He was born in Frederick County Maryland, and came to Washington Co., Virginia with his father and mother, the next we find him in Sullivan County, Tenn., in 1811, when he bought 208 acres of land for David Machon. Then we find him in Jefferson County, Tenn. then Knox County. (I found George Burkhart as a testor on David Dunn's Will in Jefferson County, 1828, Joe Payne)
He wsa often called upon to serve on the juries of Knox County Court. He always took an intelligent interest in civic affairs and at all times could be counted upon to support generously and enthusiastically any movement or enterprise promising to further civic progress and to advance the welfare of his church or the community where he lived.
Peter Burkhardt, was one of the pioneer builder's of Tennessee, and for many years an important figure in its life.
He came to Tennessee when the population of the rude and simple people in the back country of the "Territory South of the River Ohio," as this country was once calle, was composed of the deliberate and self controled English, the aggressive, and mongering Scotch-Irish, the buoyant Welsh, the thrifty Germans, the deboniar French, the impetuous Irish and the calculating Scotch.
The lives they led were marked by independence of spirit, democratic instincts, and a forthright simplicity.
The food was of the most wholesome and primitive kind, the richest meat, the finest butter, and the best meal that ever delighted man's palate were here eaten with a relish which health and labors only know. The hospitality of the people was profuse and proverbial.
The circumstances of their lives compeled the pioneers to become self-sustaining. Every immigrant was an adept at many trades. He built his won house, forged his won tools, and made his won clothes.
The frontier life, with its purifying and hardening influence, bred in these pioneer's intellectual traits which constitute the basis of the American Character.Peter Burkhart and his brother George Burkhart built a paper mill, three or four miles east of Bristol, Tenn/Va., and made the first paper west of the Blue Mountains. The old town is still there and goes by the name of Paperville.
"Peter Burkhart was a soldier with General Jackson at the battle of New Orleans in 1812." According to tanscription of Peter's family Bible, he was born Nov. 1 or 10, 1785 and dies April 10, 1868.
Eli Emanuel Burkhart's mother was Rachael Owens, d. May 19, 1832. He was born 10/12/1815 and married Malinda Sherrod (a/k/a "Shirtz") 12/27/1838.
Maude lists 9 children.

From: OlsonCFam@compuserve.com (CHARLES & ANN OLSON)Ina Fields was a cousin and contemporary of Maude's. I was told that she was a deputy clerk of court in Knoxville. Mrs. Fields put her file together from the courthouse records. Maude took what Mrs. Fields did and expanded on it in a University Swing composition book. I want to say that they colaborated but I'm not positive about how long that went on. I think that Maude may have had Peter's family Bible but I'm not positive of it. I remember being shown an old family Bible when I was given her Burkhart-Shell notebook. At a minimum she had access to it because she copied the family page in longhand in her Burkhart-Shell notebook. If she had the Bible, it would have gone to her grandchildren, Kathy Sue Orndorff Cloniger or Daniel Joseph Orndorff. I played with them as a child but haven't heard from them in over 20 years. I don't even know if either of them are living in the Knoxville area.
I saw a note from Judie Boone, who is another descendant of Peter Burkhart, inquiring about a Burkhart reunion in Knoxville this year. Have you heard anyhting about it?
