Artery Failure Fatal to Dan E. Baird, Sr.

Dan Edward Baird Sr., 68-year-ol assistant cashier at the Bank of Knoxville and formerly Knox County chief deputy trustee, died at 4:10 a.m. yesterday after being admitted to St. Mary's Hospital about 4:30 p.m. Saturday.

He had been feeling fine, according to members of the family, and was stricken while listening to the Kentucky - Tennessee football game. Death was attributed to a rupture of an artery, an attack similar to the one which claimed the life of former Mayor Jack Dance.

The bursting of the blood vessel was apparently so sever he could not call for help. Mrs. Baird found him unconsicious in his cair near the radio.

A native of Elk Valley in Campbell Co., Mr. Baird came to Knoxville in 1927 and became interested in politics. He served as chief deputy trustee under Theron Wilson and and was assistant county auditor under Joe Hart.

Mr. Baird, giving up his career in politics at 50, joined the bank 18 year years ago.

He came to Knoxville from LaFollete, where he operated hardware store.

He was a member of First Baptist Church and a Mason.

Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. Tuesday at Mann's Chapel, with Dr. Charles Trentham officiating. Interment will be in Greenwood Cememtery.

Mr. Baird is survived by his wife, Mrs. Irene Baird; daughter, Mrs. Hubert Hill; son, Dan E. Baird, Jr., of Knoxville; sister, Mrs. Luther Carney of Akron, O., Mrs. William Sharp of Toledo, O., Mrs. Vick Conley of Elk Valley, and Mrs. Linda Sharp of Jellico; brothers, A. R. Baird of Knoxville, and John A. Baird of Dayton, O., and seven grandchildren.

Daniel married Annie Irene Burkhardt, daughter of James Monroe Burkhardt and Sophia Elizabeth Davis, on 1 Sep 1921 in Knoxville, Knox Co., TN. Annie was born on 11 Apr 1898 in Knoxville, Knox Co., TN.
