Our earliest known Smith ancestors were true pioneers. They cleared and farmed land from Tennessee to Arkansas. Nehemiah, our earliest known ancestor, was born in South Carolina in 1784. In 1814, we find him living in Tennessee where he is a member of the Tennessee Militia. He was under General William Carroll's command, which fought bravely against the British at the battle of New Orleans. In the 1820 and 1830 census, we find him in Tennessee. In the 1840 census, he is living in Kentucky. By 1850 he is in Madison County Missouri where he spends the rest of his life. His son George Washington Smith, our direct ancestor, is still living in Missouri in 1880. Sometime around 1884 he moves to Sebastian County Arkansas where he spends the rest of his life. His son Josiah, also a direct ancestor of our family, raises his family and spends the rest of his life in Arkansas. He raised eleven children during his lifetime. From Josiah we will branch out and include as much information as known on each of his children and their posterity to present day. Perhaps you are part of this Smith family.
