Memories by Dwaine Anderson (nephew)
Beth,
Here are few rememberances I have of Uncle Ray. They may be of some use in his life sketch when the time comes. Don't know the exact years but, it was when you and Ray were living in the shack that used to be in the apple orchard where Con and Lou now have their home.
I was about 7 years old. One day Ray was driving Grandpa's old pick up. I wanted to ride the running board and Ray let me. He drove up towards the potato cellar so fast that I got scared and jumped of. Of course, my short legs were not up to the task and end over end I went. Skinned bruised and thought I was dead as the wind was driven out of me and I couldn't breath, not even to cry. Ray stopped the pickup and came back to see how bad I was hurt. Basically just my pride. When I could breathe, I started to cry and told Uncle Ray that he had killed me. He started to laugh and answered to the effect that knocking the wind out of an Anderson would never kill him, just shut him up for a while.
At the young age of 7 or 8, I did not understand why Mom and Dad only had two children and Aunt Beth seemed always to have a new baby. I asked my Dad about this. Dad looked at me and hesitated for a moment, then said Uncle Ray and Aunt Beth love each other a lot. Many years later and five children of my own, I was talking to Dad and asked if he remembered the conversation. He said he did. I told him that it had taken me 5 children to understand what he had really meant.
During this same period of time, Uncle Ray was shocking hay when my dog bit one of the horses on the nose, causing a runaway. Ray was thrown into the dump rake and was nearly killed. The horses finally got caught in a fence. Grandfather and Dad ran out and got Ray out of the mess and got the horses calmed down. All three (Ray and the 2 horses) were cut, bruised, scared and in Ray's case awfully mad. After fixing up Ray and the horses, Dad came to me and told me that my dog was going away and would not be back. Uncle Ray led my dog away carrying Grandfather's shotgun. Ray and the shotgun came back, but not my dog. I stayed mad at Ray for a long time.
Jump ahead to 1959 or 60 to a place called New Providence, Tenn. Mom and Dad had come to visit Wanda and I and see their new grandson. We were sitting one evening, playing cards, when the phone rang. A voice said Hi, I bet you don't know who this is. I said nope. The voice said I will laugh and you guess. He laughed and I immediately said Ray Anderson, where the hell are you. He gave me a motel name and asked if he could come over and visit? Could I give him directions to my house? I said, just put on you coat and by the time you have locked you motel door I will be there. In fact I can see your motel 2 blocks away. Not having told him that Mom and Dad were there, was he surprised when he walked into my house and dad said very dryly "Hell of a note to have to come all the way to Tennessee to see you, Ray." It seems that Ray was touring Army bases demonstrating a new type of helicopter that the company he worked for (Hiller) was trying to sell to the Army. We all enjoyed a two-day visit.
It is so hard to be someone else. To think their thoughts, to try and say what they would say, and yet this will come easy as there is always at least one free spirit in each family, and I am the one in my family. Ray far and away led in his family.

"Ray Anderson" - by Dwaine Anderson

Some rhyme and reason to say
you all know me, I am Ray.
I lived my life and lived it fully,
never harsh and no big bully.

A smile, a joke, a lot of teasing.
Just wanted to be a little pleasing.
I hid a lot of pain behind a smile,
And when you laughed, it made my day.
I took as good as I gave,
I wanted it that way.

I am gone now, to get ready to greet you.
My smile, my charm, my wit, my word.
Never mind my jokes,
Most of them you have heard.

Second to his Father,
I have always been an example to the author,
On how this life should be approached,
And survive to die without reproach
From all of you in earthly life
And also from my God.

My life is now done.
I am not sure that I have won,
But I did try,
I did try.
