Clan MacLeod — General history and links for Clan MacLeod

Here are the starting points for my Mc/MacLeods. The first URL is a pointer to my 3rd great grandfather who had six children, five of whom settled in Pictou County and one, the youngest and my 2nd great grandfather, settled in Cape Breton. The oldest, George, moved to Exeter, Huron Co, Ontario, after having taught school and then running a store in Merigomish, Pictou Co, Nova Scotia.

This first John McLeod is my direct ancestor from whom I get my surname who lived in Lairg Parish, Sutherlandshire near Dornoch on the Rosshire border. John died before 1820 and his six children and widow went to Nova Scotia. Two sons before 1820 and the rest in 1820. John Jr., the youngest of six, settled at River Inhabitance Bridge, Cape Breton Island now known as Cleveland, Richmond County. John and his second wife, Juliet Ann Grant, are buried in Grantville Cemetery. John’s first wife, my gg grandmother, Margaret McKeen, died and is buried at Wallace in the Presbyterian Cemetery. Margaret McKeen’s parents, William McKeen and Elizabeth MacDougall lived in Mabou, Inverness Co, Cape Breton Island.

Hugh, David, Daniel and brothers lived in the Durham area of Pictou Co, NS. This is the Hector line of McLeods. Daniel McLeod was my great grandmother, Hannah’s, father.

The Durham and Greenhill neighborhood of Pictou County, NS is the location of some of the earliest pioneer cemeteries in Pictou County. My great grandmother, Hannah McLeod, is buried in Haliburton Cemetery (in top right of map). Durham Cemetery is an early pioneer cemetery that contains Hector passengers and many of their early descendants. These include my ancestor, Hugh McLeod, wife Elspie (this is the spelling on the tomb stone) along with their children and spouses.

The Rev. Norman McLeod is not a relation but he is an interesting character and my Pictou ancestors likely were acquainted with him.
