Hood and Pender Families in Cornwall

Here is the starting point for the Hood Family who are still mostly in England. The American contingent has multiplied over the two generations now present on the western side of the Atlantic.

The Rev. Samual Hood was the father of two famous British Admirals and new minted Viscounts of Great Britain. There are more than a few musty tomes claiming to show descent from this man through children or grandchildren who never existed.

Keith Wood has done a great deal of research on the Hood family, mostly prior to the Rev. Samual Hood, Cannon of Wells. He appears to have found his connection to the Hood pedigree.

HMS Richmond — RN history for American Revolution time period

Samuel Hood, 1st Viscount

Lord Samuel Hood By the date this picture is probably the first Viscount Hood. Henry Hood, the second Viscount, was a courtier. His son, Francis Wheler was killed in action in 1814 so the third Viscount was Henry’s grandson. I don't have to write much about the famous Admiral, Samuel Hood, who’s family name has been used for many British Naval Vessels He played a significant role in the American Revolution. Fortunately for us he was the second in command at the Battle of the Capes and could only fume at Admiral Grave’s incompetence. He did redeem English glory at the Battle of the Saints but to late to affect the outcome of the American cause.

Adm. Hood later commanded the Mediteranian fleet and captured Toulon and Corsica.

Dorset claims the Hood cousins as their own. This Adm. Hood was born in Somerset.

Links related to Houlton of Fairleigh Castle

Houlton is an ancestor of wife of 4th Viscount Hood. They were wool and clothing merchants who purchased Fairleigh Castle. The castle was already falling apart and the Houltons are thought to have mined the ruin for timbers and stone for their own manor house on the property.
