Elizabeth Tilley was born in 1607 in Henlow, Bedfordshire, the daughter of John and Joan (Hurst)(Rogers) Tilley. She came with her parents on the Mayflower in 1620. Both her parents died the first winter at Plymouth, leaving her orphaned at the age of 13 in the New World. She married to Mayflower passenger John Howland around 1625 at Plymouth.
Elizabeth was taken in by the John Carvers after the death of both of her parents on the Mayflower. The Carvers lost a young son that same winter. (Mrs. Carver was Katherine White.) John Carver died the following winter of 1621.
Fifteen year old Elizabeth lost her parents and her uncle and aunt and was left with the care of her toddler cousin Humility Cooper. Her cousin Henry Samson, sixteen at the time of the voyage, survived, and Elizabeth later married fellow passanger John Howland.
