Harold S. Sthare, well-known for his dedication as a 28-year volunteer for the Carbon County Chapter of the American Red Cross, died yesterday in Gnaden Huetten Hospital.

Sthare, 73, of 219 N. 7th St., Lehighton, coordinated dozens of blood drives after he volunteered to work with the Red Cross blood mobile in 1963 and became blood services chairman in 1966.

Besides organizing blood drives, Sthare routinely rolled up his sleeve to donate blood, giving at least 20 gallons of blood over the years. In 1984, he and his wife, Hope (Walters) Sthare, became the first couple in northeastern Pennsylvania to reach a total lifetime donation of 30 gallons.

"I don't have much to offer humanity, but my hobby (donating blood) is one which can be used by all mankind," he said in 1983.

Richard Merluzzi, chairman of the county Red Cross Chapter, said yesterday Sthare was extremely dedicated.
"
I can't say enough about him," Merluzzi said. "As far as we were concerned, he was the blood person for our chapter. He put together all the drives, did all the work for them. He did most of that on his own. He was a hard worker."

Sthare received several community awards. Lehighton Area Chamber of Commerce selected him Volunteer of the Year in 1989 and Citizen of the Year in 1986. Lehighton Lions Club gave him its Pride of Lions Award in 1982. That year, he and his wife were honored as grand marshals for the Lehighton area Halloween parade. The county Red Cross chapter gave him its first Man of the Year Award in 1971.

He and his wife observed their 50th wedding anniversary in April.

Born in Lehighton, he was a son of the late Harry S. and Amy A. (Sloyer) Sthare.

He was a composing department employee at The Morning Call for 27 years, until 1982. After that, he briefly worked part time in the composing department of The Times News in Lehighton before retiring.
Earlier, he worked 23 years as a Linotype operator for the Evening Leader in Lehighton, which has ceased publication.

He served two years in the Navy during World War II.

He was a member of All Saints Episcopal Church, Lehighton.

Surviving with his widow are two daughters, Marie, wife of Richard Lorah, of Ashfield, and Annette, wife of Marc Hess, of Palmyra, Lebanon County; a brother, Curtis, of Emmaus; a sister, Eleanor Searfoss of Lehighton; and three grandchildren.
