Wendy Boettger :
It amazes me how people started working at such a young age in those days. I remember my
great grandmother telling me how she was sent off to be a wash girl to do the laundry of
a local butcher in Raubsville, PA. She was only 12 and she lived with the Butcher and
his family.

*Once again, note how the census taker butchered names. It should have been Edward Hartzell, Stella, his wife, and Alma, his daughter. And again, there was an “s” on the end of Dugan.
**It shows that Alma was born in NJ. That is because Minerva Avenue is in downtown Easton, right near the border of PA and NJ. Alma was born in Phillipsburg, a few miles from her home in Easton. This was characteristic of many children in that day and still is frequent today. The same occurred with my mother and my grandson, even though they never lived in New Jersey.
