250 Years of The Sloyer-Schloyer-Schleyer-Scheier Family by Linda M. Klosek quotes "The History of Northampton Country and Great Valley of the Lehigh" by William J. Heller:
The house in which he was born stood at the foot of the steps leading to Layfayette College, the Chemical Publishing Company's building later occupying the site. He had little opportunity for school attendance , went to public school until 11 years old, but that little was well improved, and by self-study he became
well-informed. He began his long Career in business as a boy clerk with T.B. Curtis, tinware and stoves, whose business was at the corner of Northampton and Sitgreaves Streets, where he was a clerk for a number of years. He was appointed assistant postmaster of Easton under Postmaster James K. Dawes, his next business change being in 1872, when he succeeded Chidsey Brothers in the Stove and house furnishing business at 212 Northampton St. There he continued in business for thirty-seven years, until 1909, when he retired. This location was one of the oldest business in Easton, having been occupied for the same business since 1825. It was a four story brick building with a frontage of 28 feet and extending 220 feet. He was an able business man, upright and progressive, keeping up with the times and conducting his store along the best modern lines. He had an excellent memory, kept a concise record of events and was an authority on local history. As a soldier of the Union, Mr. Osterstock compiled an honorable record and rose to the rank of lieutenant. He was first enlisted Aug. 1, 1862 in Company D, 129th Regiment, PA Vol. Infantry, Army of the Potomac and served nine months, his full term enlistment. During that period he was engaged at the Second Battle of Bull Run, Antietam, Kearneysville, Fredericksburg, and Chancellorsville. He was discharged May 18, 1863 but re-enlisted June 22, 1863. Immediately after the expiration of his first term, his next command being Company D, 27th Regiment, PA Emergency Corps, Colonel Frick commanding the regiment, Capt. Joseph Oliver, the company. He became first sergeant of Company D, and as such was in a severe skirmish at Wrightsville, PA, when the command, while resisting the invasion of the State of by General Early, saved themselves by burning the bridge across the Susquehanna at Colombia. Afterward, with his company, he held back a detachment of Steward's Cavalry, and then returned to Harrisburg, where he was dismissed, since his term of service had expired, July 31, 1863. On March 31, 1865 Sergeant Osterstock again enlisted., his third command being Company H, 214th Regiment, PA Vol. Infantry, attaining with that regiment a second lieutenant's commission. His captain was Edward Kelly, of Easton. Proceeding to Winchester and the Shenandoah Valley, he did private duty for a short time, and then, on account of competitive inspection, his regiment was detached from the 18th and placed on duty at Washington D.C., having charge of all Quartermasters' headquarters. He was for a part of the time adjutant, being the youngest officer in the regiment, and as an acknowledgement of his ability and soldierly qualities as an officer, he was detailed to guard all property at General Grant's headquarters, and all stores at Kendall Green, near Washington. At other times he assisted in guarding stores at various points, the Smithsonian Institute and the old Capital Prison in Washington, when it contained more then 200 rebel prisoners and spies. In the latter was confined the celebrated Werz, and during his trial our subject was the officer of the guards of the prison and also was on duty when the man was executed. Lieutenant Osterstock served with the 214th Regiment until the close of the war, when he was honorably discharged March 21, 1866 and returned to his home in Easton. In May 1868, he became Assistant Postmaster to J.L. Mingle. He served in that position until 1875, when he bought out the old place where he learned his trade and assumed charge of the business. He was very successful in this undertaking, and almost had a monopoly in this trade. He was a member of the Military Order of the Loyal Legion of the United States, Lafayette Post No. 217, Grand Army of the Republic, and for several years was an active member of the old Phoenix Fire Company, being its vice-president at the time that organization was disbanded, October 30, 1879. He was the leader of many of the large parades as chief marshal, and for many years he assisted in the alumni dinner at Lafayette College. He was elected member of Easton's first Common Council, under the city charter of 1887, representing First Ward. He took seat in Council, April 4, 1887, and served until April 1, 1889.

Joseph married 1 Sarah A. SHEATZ in Apr 1867 in Christ Ev. Lutheran Church records. Sarah was born 2 on 18 Aug 1844. She died 3 on 26 Oct 1914. She was buried 4 in Easton Cemetery; Easton, Pennsylvania.
They had the following children:
927 M i John Frederic OSTERSTOCK was born 1 on 21 May 1884 in Easton, Pennsylvania. He died 2 on 20 Oct 1957. He was buried 3 in Easton Cemetery; Easton, Pennsylvania. John was baptized 4 on 11 Feb 1885 in Christ Ev. Lutheran Church records.
250 Years of The Sloyer-Schloyer-Schleyer-Scheier Family by Linda M. Klosek quotes "The History of Northampton Country and Great Valley of the Lehigh" by William J. Heller:
As manager of Easton's three leading theatres, Mr. Osterstock was responsible to a large degree for the quality and quantity of theatrical entertainment furnished the people of the city. That the responsibility was well met was the consensus in Easton's opinion, and the degree of prosperity which has attended the operation of the theatres which was managed was the only other evidence needed to prove that as purveyor of entertainment to the public he was a success. J. Frederick was a veteran of the Civil War, successful merchant and worthy citizen, now gone to his reward. Mr. Osterstock was a member of the seventh generation of the family founded in Pennsylvania by Matthias Osterstock, Sr., who came to Philadelphia in 1749. According to competent authority, the Osterstocks of Easton descend from Grav. Friderick Zolr de Ostertag, who in 1315 lived in Tabigen in Wurtemberg as per Smidt's "History of the Palatine Counts of Zollern-hohenberg." Siegfriend Ostertag, a descendent of the above, lived in Stuttgart, in the same principality, in 1393. The two families noted in the vicinity in 1870 in a work of Heraldry by Rietstap, whose coat-of-arms denote a common origin, as are follows: Ostertag of Suabia (included now in Wurtemberg and Bavaria, capital, Augsburg), also Ostertag of Norlingen, on the border between two former states, whose coat-of-arms is as follows: D'azur a un agneau pascal d'argent, la tete entouree D'une aureole d'or, passant, sue une colline de sinople. Cimier l'agneau pascal. Lambrequins; d'or et d'azur. This being interpreted is:
Arms -- On a shield of blue with an Easter lamb of silver, the head surrounded with a halo of gold, walking on a hill of green.
Crest -- Easter lamb. Drapery: of gold and blue.
J. Frederick was educated in the public schools of the city, prepared in Easton Academy, passing thence to Lafayette College, a member of the class of 1905. In college he was a leader in the musical circles. He was a member of Zeta Psi fraternity, and one of the well liked and popular men of his class. After graduation he located in Philadelphia, where for eighteen months he was associated with James B. Carson and Company, real estate aperators, in their surveying and engineering department. The following two years he was an engineer in charge of shop construction for the Pennsylvania railroad, then for three seasons was manager and musical director of the road theratrical company. At the expiration of his third season he returned to Easton to assume the management of the newly completed Orpheum Theatre, and in 1910 the Able Opera House was also placed under his capable direction as manager. He became well known as a successful manager and in 1916 the Colonial was added to his list of theatres, he acting as the Easton manager of the Wilmer and Vincent incorporated interest. In addition to the foregoing responsibilities, he had during that period of theatrical management served as a temporary manager of the Wilmer and Vincent interests in their new theatres in Richmond, VA, and Allentown, PA. He was undeniably successful as an entertainment purveyor, and to his own musical talent and love of the theatre, coupled with an adhered-to policy of furnishing to the theatre-going public only high class, clean productions, his unusual success must be attributed. He was a member of Easton Board of Trade, the Kiwanis Club, and the Northampton County Country Club, his politics, Republican and his religious affiliation was Christ Lutheran Church.

Obituary Mrs Frank Wasser, 1909
Just received this obituary from the Bethlehem Area Public Library: Mrs. Frank Wasser, Beth. Globe Times, March 11, 1909 Elizabeth, wife of Frank Wasser, died of paralysis at the family residence, Ironville, Sunday. She was a daughter of Peter Brown and wife, was born Feb. 10, 1839, and was aged 70 years, 8 months and 21 days. She was united in marriage with Frank Wasser, Oct. 8, 1866, and besides her husband is survived by two daughters, Mrs. John Weiland, Lower Saucon, and Mrs. Harry Moyer, Hellertown. The funeral will be private at the house and will be held Thursday afternoon at 2 o'clock, with a service in Trinity Church, Ironville. Interment will be made in the cemetery adjoining. The fact that she is listed as the daughter of Peter Brown and with a birthdate of Feb. 10, 1839 sure convinces me that she is the daughter of Peter and Louisa Brown. You will note in Ruth Allen's book on the second to the last page that Elizabeth Barbara Brown's birthdate is given as 10 July ? but I think this is a mistake and that she and Anna Maria were twin sisters and were born on 10 Feb 1839, the date that is recorded for Anna Maria.
They had the following children:
