*****************************
Edward grew up in Springfield Twp, Bucks County, Pa with his family as outlined in the 1850 census information. The family attended the Old Williams Lutheran Congregation, now known as the St. Luke's LutheranChurch, Williams Twp., Northampton Co., Pa. Edward trained to be a carpenter like his father.Nine months past his 18th birthday he enlisted in the Army. Enlistment information describes him as 5' 8" tall with darkcomplexion, brown hair and eyes and having been a laborer (Pension file#147625) He volunteered on Sept. 22, 1862 in Easton Pa. for 9 months service. He was a private in Captain Stout's Company 1 Regiment Pennsylvania Volunteers. Captain Stout's Company traveled to Fort Curtinin Harrisburg, Pa. They were mustered in October 7, 1862 as Company F153rd Pennsylvania Volunteers. The 153rd Pennsylvania Volunteers were assigned to the First Brigade, First Division, Eleventh Corps. They transferred to Washington, DC on October 12, 1862 where they remained until December 1862. The unit joined the Army of the Potomac in time for Burnsides Mud March in January 1863. General Sigel's Eleventh Corps was on the Army's right during the Battle of Chancellorville. on May 2nd 1863 the XI Corps was routed by Stonewall Jackson's 2nd Corps of General Lee'sArmy of Northern Virginia. In June of 1863 both armies moved North. The153rd Pennsylvania Volunteers and the XI Corps arrived at Gettysburg midmorning. Edward's version of those events form his Pension File are asfollows:
"On or about July 1st 1863 I was with my company about 18 miles from Gettysburg, Penna: about 6 o'clock in the afternoon we took up a forced march to Gettysburg arriving at Gettysburg about 10 o'clock in theforenoon and immediately engaged the enemy beyond the town after we afterwe had engaged them about half an hour when we were ordered to fallback. While crossing a Clover Stubble field I was shot in the thigh (right), and soon fell to the ground helpless, unable to rise to my feet, the blood spurting from my wound in a torrent. My regiment passed on and left of me, and the rebel line of battle passed over and while lying on the ground in rear of the rebels I received a shot in the right side. Just below and a little back of the right nipple and following the rib that it struck past out at the breast bone...That I lay in the Cloverfield aforesaid until the evening of the next day -- being wounded between eleven and twelve forenoon and from exposure to the excessive heat of the sun for that time, and being without shelter of any kind Icontracted inflammation of both eyes which resulted in great weakness of my eyes and partial loss of the sight of both my eyes... All the afternoon of the day I was shot I was wholly unconscious, until the nighttime, in the Clover fields where I fell...(Pension file #147625, Claim paper for Increased Invalid Pension dated July 8, 1885) "
According to the pension file Edward was treated at the Poor HouseBuilding on the battlefield for several days prior to being moved to a temporary Hospital on the battlefield where he remained until August 1,1863. at that time he was sent to a hospital in Harrisburg for five months of treatment. Private Sloyer was mustered out July 24, 1863 at Camp Curtin, Harrisburg, Pa.
After recuperating at home, he attempted to work as a carpenter. This was strenuous work requiring him to travel to each job site and remain on his feet. As each year passed it became more difficult becauseof his war injuries. He applied for a pension in 1875 and again in 1876 .His pension of $4 per month was approved in 1877. Over the years this was increased and made retroactive to 1863.
In about 1880 Edward, his wife, and parents, Samuel and Catherine, moved to Rollerville, Sandusky Co. Ohio joining his brother Levine who had moved earlier . Samuel and Edward and their families subsequently moved to Brader, Wood Co. Ohio. from 1880 thru the 1890 Edward continued to apply for increasing pension since his injuries became increasing more deblitating. They forced him toi give up carpentry and opened a small shop in his home making stringed instuments. He also may have had to remain home since his wife developed "consumption" or tuberculosis from which she died in 1900. Edward continued to apply for pension increases. He died in 1919 at The State Soldiers Home, Sandusky, Erie Co., OH from apoplexy (a cerebral hemorrage).
Two unfinished instruments, violins, were saved for his oldest granddaughters at his death in 1919. and his great granddaughter, JoyceGodfrey, has been abe to purchase on of his finished violins.Joyce tells the story :"Years ago I found the 153rd roster on theNorthampton Co. site and left my e-mail attached to Edward's name. In June of 1999 I was contacted by a violinist from San Francisco. She had found the 153rd roster also - she wanted to know if this man could have been making violins in Ohio about 1900. I replied yes, she sent me pictures, and asked for more information on Edward's life. I had written Edward's story for a Civil War history course I took, I updated the story, and sent it off to her. She offered to sell me the violin! I had very mixed feelings - as much as I wanted this wonderful family treasure,it had been made to be played, and was still being played 100 yearslater, so we reached a compromise. When she bought (always old) new violins she would offer Edward's to me first. In February (2000) she made the offer to sell and I took her up on it. I am now the very proud caretaker of this instrument. My hope is that someday I will have a grandchild who will want to learn to play the violin, of course not on that one, but I will pass it along at some time".

THE SANDUSKY REGISTER; Sandusky, Ohio; Tuesday Feb. 11, 1919; p. 3COMRADE DENIED HALF-FARE RATE; NEWS AT HOME
According to Comrade Edward Sloyer's story, as he related on his return from Toledo, not all railway station agents fully understand the rules governing the half-fare rates allowed to members of soldiers homes. Sloyer secured a furlough here Jan. 30, and with it the identification cards which entitled him to go to Toledo, thence to Bradner, O., and from Bradner to Sandusky.
He returned here a day or two since, and now states that he got to Toledo and Bradner on the half-fare rate, but that when he presented his identification card to the station agent at Bradner for a hal-fare ticket to Sandusky the agent refused to honor it.
As the matter is now the subject of some correspondance criticism is withheld until all the facts are known. Bradner is a station on the Hocking Valley road, which line is among those enumerated in the instructions to the various railways of the United States regarding half-fare rates.
