Copy of letter written by James N. Slocum to a
Dr. Charles E. Slocum of Syracuse NY. Written in New Bedford,
MA on September 22 1880.
Mr. Slocum sir, I received your letter in due time.
I will write as far as I know. I wrote you my great grandmother
was one of the three that came from England in the time of the
Revolutionary War. Her name was Saley Slocum. She was not married
when my grandfather William Slocum was born. His Father was
named Davis but he took his mother's name. Then she married a man
named Smith and had more children.
William that was my Grandfather married a woman by the
name of Anna Shurman of Tiverton. They had 9 (8) ? children six (5)? boys
and three girls. The Oldest boy was Job. He died as a young man.
He would have been about 86 yrs old. Then Poley Slocum she married
William Tabor they had 16 children, all dead.
She would be about 84 years old. Then William Slocum Jr.
he married Hannah Young of Cape Cod. They had 12 children. All dead.
He would be about 82. Then Betsy she died at 15 with consumption.
She would be about 80. Then Squire he died about 40 years ago.
He served in the ____day war, many years came home blind.
Then Samuel Slocum that is my father, He is living, he is 76.
He was married to Lucinda Cahoon of Cape Cod. They had 6 children.
Then she died and he married Betsy Rodley and they had 6 more children.
Then there was Lyman Slocum he was never married .
He went to (looks like Turkey?) about 43 years ago and never returned.
He would be about 74. Then Hannah she married William Negus.
They are living she had 12 children 7girls and 5 boys.
Then Eliza she married Patrick McNelly she had 9 children
7 boys and 2 girls they are dead. She would be about 66.
That is all I know of my grandfathers family William Slocum.
Now I will tell you what I can remember of Samuel Slocum.
That is my father. He married at the age of 19 years
to Lucinda Cahoon of Cape Cod. They had 6 children.
Delany she is dead. She married John Hines. She would be about 56.
Then Samuel he died at 17 he would be 54. Then James N that is me.
I married 25 years ago to Eliza Negus.
We have three children, two boys and a girl. I am 52.
Then Eliza (I believe this is his sister Eliza and not his wife)
she married Hugh Burns. She had 8 children and died.
She would be 46 years. Then another Eliza died at 4 years.
She would be 48 then one that was not named would be 50.
Then my father married again a Betsy Rodley.
Then they had a girl named Sarah. She married Thomas Berry.
They had five sons. She is living , she is 48. Then Lyman and Lewis twins.
Lyman married a Rhobea Wood of Pawtucket they have 7 children.
They are living he is 41. Lewis married Susan Follett of Pawtucket,
They have 2 children. He is 41. William he married
Hannah Follett had 2 sons she is dead he is 39.
Thomas he married Ellen Dixson of Pawtucket he has 3 children.
He is 37. Samuel Jr. He married Eliza short of Providence he has one son,
he is 35. This finishes my fathers family. If there is anything more
I can tell you I will write. My father has lived in Pawtucket
for over 60 years.

My family consists of my wife Eliza Slocum. My son Andrew M. Slocum.
He was born in New Bedford in 1861.
My daughter Anna E. Slocum born in New Bedford in 1876.
I was born in Seekonk in 1828. I am the son of Samuel Slocum of
Tiverton RI. I have five brothers living in Pawtucket RI.
Their names are Lyman F, Lewis F, twins. William H, Thomas D,
and Samuel and one sister Sarah. She is married to Thomas Berry.
I had 3 sisters and a brother dead. My father Samuel Slocum
was the son of William Slocum of Tiverton, RI.
He as the father of 9 children five sons their given names was
William, Squire, Samuel, Lyman, Job, all dead.
But Samuel and Lyman. 4 daughters Polly, Betsy, Hannah and Eliza.
