Thomas Hughes was a Doctor. They had a nervous horse and he was going to hitch the horse to the buggy to go to Crawford Long Hospital where he had ill patients. His wife, Margaret begged him not to use that horse, but he did anyway. The horse got spooked by a streetcar and ran away with him, throwing him off and against a building where he hit his head, rendering him unconcious. He never regained conciousness and died in Crawford Long Hospital. They were living in Douglas Cty, Ga. at that time and his wife, Margaret, raised the children herself.

Arlene became ill and Bessie treated her at home as best as she could with no improvement, they took her to the Dr. and this Dr. treated her for Malaria for about a week before she became so ill that they took her to the hospital. At the hospital they discovered the true cause of her illness and performed surgery. Upon opening her up it was found that her appendix had ruptured and the poison had infected her so severely by this time that there wasn't much they could do to save her. She lived one more day in the hospital and passed away sometime after dark. This was told by Bessie Jenkins to her son and daughter-in-law at the age of 87 with as vivid a memory as it had happened yesterday. She said she walked to the end of the hall where there was a window to see if the sun had set because she knew that Arlene was going to die after the sun went down, and she did.
