She attended Maple Grove Country Schools and Olin Consolidated Schools. As a young woman, Marjorie worked at Balsters in Scotch Grove. On July 6, 1938, Marjorie married Lawrence Eldon (Eddie) Soper. In 1944 they began farming on a farm North of Olin. In 1956, they moved their family to Olin. Marjorie worked for many years as a cook in the Olin Schools. Marjorie was a member of the Olin United Methodist Church. Marjorie enjoyed her family and friends. She took pride in her plants and flowers, was an excellent cook, and enjoyed sewing, knitting, crocheting and spending time at their summer home in Delhi. She faithfully kept a diary for over 60 years. Marjorie is survived by one son, Gary (Karen) Soper, of Harpers Ferry, and one daughter, Sandra (Larry) Anderson, of Perry, Missouri; 3 grandchildren, Jared (Jill) Soper of Waukon, Kari (Paul) Rea of Cedar Falls, and Kelly John Anderson of Hiawatha; one sister-in-law, Pauline Batchelder of Anamosa, and one great grandson, Brent Ziegler. She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, two brothers, Clifford and Raymond Batchelder and a sister-in-law, Marcella Batchelder. Marjorie Evelyn Batchelder Soper of Olin, died Thursday, October 26, 2006, at the Good Samaritan Nursing Home, Waukon, Iowa, at the age of 90 years. Marjorie will be laid to rest next to her husband, Eddie at the Antioch Cemetery, Anamosa, Iowa. Blessed be her memory

MRS.  E. BATCHELDER PASSED AWAY MARCH 26TH
CENTER JUNCTION...Mrs. Elizabeth A. Batchelder passed away at her home in Center Junction on March 26, 1954. She was born Dec. 24, 1887 near Olin. She was married to Claude H. Batchelder in 1907 at Anamosa by the Rev. Dean Dutton. All of her married life was spent in Jones county.
Three children and her husband survive. The children are Clifford of Olin, Marjorie (Mrs. Ed Soper) of Wyoming and Raymond of Wyoming.
She is also survived by five grandchildren; four sisters, Mrs. Dora Craig of Anamosa, Mrs. Earl Batchelder of Central City, Mrs. Berdena Preston of Boone, and Mrs. Floyd Cadwell of San Diego, Calif., and one brother, Harvey House of Sweet Springs, MO.  She was a member of the Cass Congregational church.

  Funeral services for William Westphal, 54, who died Friday afternoon at Mercy hospital, Anamosa, following an illness resultant of four major operations in six months, were held Sunday at 2:30 p.m. from the Lutheran church in Wyoming.  The Rev. H.  Graening was in charge with burial in the Wyoming cemetery.
 The deceased was born in Schleswig-Holstein, Germany Aug 27, 1890.  He came to the vicinity of Wyoming in 1906 and worked on farms.  For 11 years he was employed on the Levsen farms near Clarence.
  In 1926 he was united in marriage to Miss Minna Martensen of Wyoming and the home thereafter was on farms in the Wyoming community.
  He is survived by his widow, three daughters, and one son:  Idalene, Doris, Verna Mae, and Donald, all at home; two sisters, Mrs. Louis Buchholtz of Wyoming and Mrs. Carl Grabbe of Anamosa; also supposedly his parents and a brother and sister in Germany.  They were last heard from two years ago.

Minna Williard
Minna M. Willard, 76, died at Mercy hospital in Cedar Rapids Tuesday morning, Oct. 30, following an illness of several weeks. She was born at Wyoming on Sept. 9, 1903, the daughter of Cornelius and Ida Thompson Martenaen. She received her education in the rural Jones county schools.  She was married to William Westphal Dec. 2, 1926 and they were the parents of four children: Idalene, Verna, Doris and Donald.
Mr. Westphal preceded her in death Feb. 2, 1945.  Mrs. Westphal later moved to Anamosa to make her home where she was married to Lester Ankeny Sept. 19, 1956 and he preceded her in death Feb. 10, 1974.  On July 30, 1977 she was married to Leon Willard who survives along with her daughters, Mrs. Harold (Idalene) Huston of Anamosa; Mrs. Richard (Verna) Schmidt of Anamosa and Mrs. Raymond (Doris) Antons of Center Junction; also surviving are 11 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. In addition to her husbands she was preceded in death by her son, Donald, parents and two brothers.
Funeral services were held Friday afternoon, Nov. 2, 1979 at the St. Paul Lutheran church at 1:30 p.m. with burial in Wyoming cemetery at Wyoming. Rev. Harvey 0. Gilbertson officiated at the services.  Casket bearers were her grandsons, Larry Huston, Tom Huston, William Antons,
Randy Antons, Michael Schmidt and William Westphal.

Clifford Batchelder
Clifford H. Batchelder, age 82, of Olin,Iowa, died Wednesday, May 5, 1993 at the Community Hospital in Anamosa, Iowa.  He was born at Langworthy, Iowa, on February 24, 1911, the son of Claude and Elizabeth House Batchelder. He started his schooling at Maple Grove country school northeast of Olin and completed his education at Olin High School.  On December 4, 1935 he married Pauline Stickley at Anamosa. The couple made their home at Center Junction, where Clifford hauled cream to town for the farmers. In 1942 they began farming and lived in the Olin area until retiring to Olin in 1975. After moving to town Clifford worked in a local gas station for several years.  He is survived by his wife Pauline, one brother Raymond and one sister Marjorie Soper, both of Olin, and many nieces and  nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents. Funeral services were held Saturday, May 8, at 10:30 A.M. at the Hayden Funeral Home in Olin where friends called on Friday from 3 - 8:00 P.M. Burial was in North Madison Pioneer Cemetery near Center Junction. Rev. Edward Frank officiated. Casket Bearers were Leonard Serbousek, James Crowley, Merle Husmann, Richard Wink, Dean Mead, and Richard McAtee.

She then went to work at the Reliance Shirt Factory in Anamosa. Pauline Stickley and Clifford Batchelder were married December 4, 1935 at the First Congregational Church, Anamosa. The couple farmed near Center Junction for 6 years and then moved to a farm near Wyoming. They retired from farming in 1975 and moved to Olin, Iowa. Clifford preceded her in death in May 5, 1993. In 2004 Pauline moved to Anamosa where she lived in Senior Housing until moving to the care center in January of 2006.

He also worked as a substitute mail carrier. Paul was the postmaster at Monticello, Iowa from 1954 until 1978. He was a member of the American Legion and V.F.W. and the ATR84 Association.

Memorial services will be held 11:00 Saturday morning, December 21, 2002 at the St. Matthew Lutheran Church, Monticello where the family will receive friends following the service. Private family interment services will be held at the Wayne Zion Cemetery. Goettsch Funeral Home, Monticello is in charge of the arrangements. Alva Henry Freese was born April 13, 1916 on the Freese family farm in Wayne Township, Jones County, Iowa. He was the son of John Henry and Marie Folkers, Freese. Alva was married to his first wife, Carol Naylor, the mother of his oldest children, Gayle, Sharon and Karen, in 1935. Alva Freese and Dorothy Helen Rismiller were married December 3, 1941 at Kahoka, Missouri. The couple farmed in Lovell Township, Jones County, Iowa. Alva founded Freese Motors in 1946, a Ford Tractor and Implement dealership while still farming. He later branched into the Ford Automobile Dealership with his brother Louis. In 1979 the couple retired to LaFayette, Georgia. Dorothy preceded him in death on April 5, 1989. Alva Freese and Reba Burrack were married in November of 1989. The couple made their home in Fairfield Bay, Arkansas. In recent months they had moved to Conway, Arkansas to be closer to the dialysis center. Alva had belonged to; St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church, the Oakwood Cemetery Board, Monticello Senior Home Association, the Iowa Auto Dealers Association, and the Iowa Farm Equipment Dealers Association. He was a 50 year member of the the Lions Club, starting in Monticello and continuing his membership in Georgia and Arkansas. Alva will be greatly missed by many. He was a wonderful father and husband with an incredible sense of humor. Even at the end he had such a sparkle in his eyes. He loved people and being around them. Like Will Rogers, Alva always said he never met a person he didn’t like. His friends and family made him very happy. He enjoyed talking about cars, loved to travel and play golf. In lieu of flowers, friends may contribute to the First Methodist Church in Fairfield Bay, Arkansas or to the Kidney Foundation.

Alva H. Freese , age 86, of Fairfield Bay, Arkansas and formerly of Monticello, died Friday morning, December 13, 2002 at his home in the arms of his wife, Reba. Memorial services will be held 11:00 Saturday morning, December 21, 2002 at the St. Matthew Lutheran Church, Monticello where the family will receive friends following the service. Private family interment services will be held at the Wayne Zion Cemetery. Goettsch Funeral Home, Monticello is in charge of the arrangements. Surviving is his wife, Reba, 3 daughters, Sharon (Art) Kromminga, Monticello, Karen (Ramon) Figueira, Fishers, Indiana, Carolyn Michelle Freese, Richmond, Virginia, 6 Grandchildren, and 12 great-Grandchildren, a brother, Louis (Janie) Freese, and a sister, Ella Schwartz, both of Monticello and a sister, Irene Biere, of Dubuque. He was preceded in death by his Parents, his 2nd wife, Dorothy, an infant daughter, Gayle, 2 sons, Johnny and Phillip, and 3 sisters, Bernice, Evalena and Annette. Alva Henry Freese was born April 13, 1916 on the Freese family farm in Wayne Township, Jones County, Iowa. He was the son of John Henry and Marie Folkers, Freese. Alva was married to his first wife, Carol Naylor, the mother of his oldest children, Gayle, Sharon and Karen, in 1935. Alva Freese and Dorothy Helen Rismiller were married December 3, 1941 at Kahoka, Missouri. The couple farmed in Lovell Township, Jones County, Iowa. Alva founded Freese Motors in 1946, a Ford Tractor and Implement dealership while still farming. He later branched into the Ford Automobile Dealership with his brother Louis. In 1979 the couple retired to LaFayette, Georgia. Dorothy preceded him in death on April 5, 1989. Alva Freese and Reba Burrack were married in November of 1989. The couple made their home in Fairfield Bay, Arkansas. In recent months they had moved to Conway, Arkansas to be closer to the dialysis center. Alva had belonged to; St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church, the Oakwood Cemetery Board, Monticello Senior Home Association, the Iowa Auto Dealers Association, and the Iowa Farm Equipment Dealers Association. He was a 50 year member of the the Lions Club, starting in Monticello and continuing his membership in Georgia and Arkansas. Alva will be greatly missed by many. He was a wonderful father and husband with an incredible sense of humor. Even at the end he had such a sparkle in his eyes. He loved people and being around them. Like Will Rogers, Alva always said he never met a person he didn’t like. His friends and family made him very happy. He enjoyed talking about cars, loved to travel and play golf. In lieu of flowers, friends may contribute to the First Methodist Church in Fairfield Bay, Arkansas or to the Kidney Foundation.

   Funeral services for Dorothy Freese, 67, were held April 10 at St.  Matthew's Lutheran Church, Monticello, with burial in Wayne Zion Cemetery, rural Monticello. The Rev. Gary Hatcher officiated at the services.
    Dorothy Freese of LaFayette, GA, and formerly of Monticello, died April 5 at Hutcheson Medical Center, Fort Oglethorpe, GA, following a brief illness.
 Dorothy Helen Rismiller was born Nov 18, 1921 in Johnson County, IA, the daughter of Harry and Nora Steers Rismiller.  She was a 1938 graduate of Tipton High School and was employed at the Cedar County Treasurer's office.
Dorothy Rismiller and Alva Freese were married Dec. 3, 1941 at Kahoka, MO.    The couple made their home in Lovell Township, Jones County, where they armed.  In 1946 Alva started Freese Implement Sales, a Ford tractor dealership and later bought the Ford car dealership.   Dorothy operated a ceramics business from her home for several years.  The couple retired and moved to LaFayette in 1979.
  Dorothy had been a member of St.  Matthew's Lutheran Church, Monticello and presently a member of the First United Methodist Church in LaFayette, where she sang in the choir.
  Dorothy is survived by her husband; three daughters, Sharon Kromminga of Monticello, Karen Rucker of Noblesville, IN, and Carolyn Michelle Freese of Richmond, VA; six grandchildren, four great-grandchildren; one sister, Jean VanDusen, LaFayette, GA;  two brothers, Don Rismiller of LaFayette and Robert Rismiller of Forestville, MI.  She was preceded in death by her parents, two sons, John and Phillip, and two brothers.

MONTICELLO BOY FATALLY BURNED IN HOUSE BLAZE
John Freese Died In University Hospital Saturday
MONTICELLO….John Freese, 9, was fatally burned when fire destroyed his parents' Monticello home at about 11 p.m. Friday, June 11.
Son of Mr. and Mrs. Alva Freese, he died at University hospital, Iowa City, at about 9:30 a.m. Saturday.
Funeral services were held Monday at 2 p.m. at St. Matthew's Lutheran church, Monticello.
Rev. H.L. Adix officiated with burial in Wayne Zion cemetery.
Apparently Confused
John was sleeping on a screened porch on the first floor when the fire broke out. He apparently became confused; witnesses said and crawled into the kitchen through a window from the porch. He was found part way through the window which led firemen to believe he had tried to crawl out through the window again. His parents were trapped on the second floor as the fire engulfed the house and were rescued from the roof of the porch.
Cause Not Known
Cause of the blaze had not been determined at last report, but it was believed to have started from a gas explosion since the flames swept through the structure in seconds.
Young Freese was born at Monticello July 6, 1944 and had just completed fourth grade at the Monticello public school.

TWO MONTICELLO YOUTHS KILE IN AUTO ACCODENT
  Funeral services for Phillip Freese, 19 were help at 2 p.m.in St. Matthew Lutheran church.
The two youths were killed instantly in a car-truck crash about 7 a.m. last Thursday while enroute to classes at Kirwood Community college, Cedar Rapids.
  The early morning collision occurred on highway 1, about one half mile south of Martell in Linn County.  Freese was driving the late-model Pontiac.  He had just passed another car when he apparently lost control of his southbound auto and skidded broadside into the past of the truck.
About an inch of snow had fallen and the roads were slick and wet at the time of the accident.
  Phillip George Freese was born July 26, 1951, in Des Moines. He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Alva Freese.  He graduated in 1970 from Monticello high school
 He is survived by his parents, three sisters, Caroline, at home, Mrs. Arthur (Sharon) Kromminga, Monticello and Mrs. John (Karen) Rucker, Indianapolis, Ind.
    He was preceded in death by one brother.
  Burial was in Wayne Zion Lutheran church cemetery.  The Rev.  Harold Naig officiated at the services.
   Casketbearers were Douglas Guilford, Robert Capron, Dale Andrews, Dana Jenson, James Bone, Mark Bradley, Lance Yeoman and Douglas Cheney.
