MONTICELLO BOY FATALLY BURNED IN HOUSE BLAZE
John Freese Died In University Hospital Saturday
MONTICELLO….John Freese, 9, was fatally burned when fire destroyed his parents' Monticello home at about 11 p.m. Friday, June 11.
Son of Mr. and Mrs. Alva Freese, he died at University hospital, Iowa City, at about 9:30 a.m. Saturday.
Funeral services were held Monday at 2 p.m. at St. Matthew's Lutheran church, Monticello.
Rev. H.L. Adix officiated with burial in Wayne Zion cemetery.
Apparently Confused
John was sleeping on a screened porch on the first floor when the fire broke out. He apparently became confused; witnesses said and crawled into the kitchen through a window from the porch. He was found part way through the window which led firemen to believe he had tried to crawl out through the window again. His parents were trapped on the second floor as the fire engulfed the house and were rescued from the roof of the porch.
Cause Not Known
Cause of the blaze had not been determined at last report, but it was believed to have started from a gas explosion since the flames swept through the structure in seconds.
Young Freese was born at Monticello July 6, 1944 and had just completed fourth grade at the Monticello public school.
Survivors Listed
Besides his parents he is survived by two half-sisters, Sharon, at home, and Karen, who lives in California; maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Harvey Rismiller, Inglewood Calif; paternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. John Freese, Anamosa; several aunts and uncles
