Bartlett, March 15 - The last of the old Landmarks removed. Mrs Lucy Jones, relict of Garner Jones, whom she survived for forty years, and last of the early settlers of this place passed away last evening after an illness of several months, aged 93 years, 11 months, and 5 days. She was born in Connecticut. She came wither her husband to this place about the year 1829 and located on the farm where she died. Mrs Jones was noted for her strict integrity, force of character and kindness to the poor. she retained her faculties to a remarkable degree until within a few days of her demise. She professed religion when quite young and united with the Baptist Church. She is survived by two daughters M. S. M. Carpenter and Mrs George B. Temple, both of this place, who have been untiring in their care for her.

Benjamin Jones was born in 1696 in Northampton, Hampshire, MA. He died on 1 Feb 1783 in Coventry, Tolland, CT. Benjamin's father and two brothers were killed in an indian attack, and his mother taken by the indians and later died in captivity in Canada. His half brother and other apparent relatives ended up moving to Wethersfield, by 1707 and in Coventry by 1713. Family verbal history states that he moved in 1709 from Northampton to Andover, Coventry TWP, Tolland County, CT.

Patience' birth record and parents names was first found in the LDS acestral files. The only other confirming source found so far is from "Colonial Families of the United States of America", Genealogical Publishing Company, 1966: Patience Evarts, daughter of John of Guilford, born 2 May 1695, married Benjamin Jones.

From "Genealogical and Personal Memoirs, Relating to the Families of the State of Massachusetts", Lewis Historical Publishing Company, 1910:

Benjamin, son of Benoni Jones, was born in 1696 or earlier. After the massacre at Northampton, May 13, 1704, when his father and two brothers were killed and his mother taken a captive, he appears to have removed with the Janes family to Coventry, Connecticut. Benjamin Janes, with whom he went, was son of the immigrant William Janes or Jeanes, who was a school teacher at New Haven, Wethersfield and Northampton, and perhaps brother of Griffith Jones. The history of Wethersfield, indeed, gives Benoni as a son of William Janes. The maintenance of the difference in spelling the name though the families lived side by side, is a means of tracing them and is evidence that this Benjamin Jones was the son of Benoni Jones, not of Benjamin Janes. The similarity of names of the children of this Benjamin Jones and those of Benoni Jones corroborates this assumption.

Benoni Jones was born about 1665 in prob. Springfield, Hampden, MA. He died on 13 May 1704 in Pascomuck, near Mt Tom, Northampton, Hampshire, MA.

At the age of twelve, Benoni was indentured to William Clarke of Northampton, until he came of age. It was stipulated that Clarke should "learn him to read and write and give him five pounds at the end of his term with sufficient clothig such as servants usually have and at the end of his time two suits of apparel". He and four others resided in Pascommuck, now Easthampton, settled about 1699. His farm was about four miles from Northampton center and was the garrison house during Indian hostilities. Benoni and two sons were slain by the Indians May 13, 1704, and his wife taken a captive to Canada, where she died later in the year. The wife of Benjamin Janes, a neighbor and relative, was taken to the top of Pomeroy Mountain, scalped and left for dead, but she recovered. Benjamin moved to Coventry, Connecticut. Samuel Janes was slain during the same attack.

Pascommuck Re-settled: Pascommuck, after its destruction by the Indians, in 1704, remained for thirteen years without an inhabitant. Only a few of the heirs of former owners came back to the place. Most of them sold out and removed to other towns. The first person to return within its desolate borders was Samuel Janes, whose father, mother, sister and two brothers, were victims of the massacre. he was married and settled upon the old homestead in 1717. For about three years he lived there without neighbors, but in 1720, John Langton purchased and occupied the homestead of Benoni Jones. Eight years afterwards, Lieut. Elisha Searl, whose adventures while a captive with the Indians in Canada, have already been chronicled in these pages, took possession of the Searl homestead. Benjamin Janes sold his homestead to Jonathan Hunt and removed to Coventry. No one lived on the place till it was purchased by Philip Clark. Moses Hutchinson left no heirs, and his home lot came into the possession of Ebenezer Ferry.

[Ebenezer] was an active patriot during the revolution. In 1774 he served on the committee of inspection. He was highway surveyor in 1775. He is called lieutenant on the Palmer records and doubtless fought in the French and Indian war. He was chosen on a committee to provision the minutemen at the time of the Lexington call with a barrel of biscuit, a barrel of pork, a barrel of flour. He served on the committee of correspondence in 1776; and on the committee to care for the families of revolutionary soldiers in 1777. He was a selectman 1777-79.

The head of the first Jones family in Huron was Elihu, who had been a soldier in the Revolutionary War and who, notwithstanding the fact that the Revolution had ended many years before, still stood ready to fight for his home and country. When in Jun 1813, during the War of 1812, the British fleet on Lake Ontario opened fire on Sodus Point and the news reached Elihu, he shouldered his old Revolutionary flint-lock and with some of his neighbors started for the "Point" but when they reached Sodus Bay the ships had departed.

The Jones family of this sketch was of Welsh ancestry and is closely related to the Janes family, the immigrant ancestor of which spelled his name Jeanes. The Jones and Janes families were closely connected for many generations.

Griffin or Griffith Jones, immigrant ancestor, settled in Springfield, Massachusetts, as early as 1646 and was a proprietor of the town in that year. He was admitted a freeman April 5, 1649. He was a Welshman and married Sarah ------- before coming to this country. She died May 6, 1665; he died February 19, 1676-77. The two younger children were bound out until they came of age, Pelatiah to Deacon William Holton, of Northampton, and Benoni to Lieutenant William Clarke, of Northampton. The estate was administered by sons Samuel and Ebenezer.

Sarah Maria Jones was born on 18 Jun 1832.⁽¹⁷⁾ She died on 1 Mar 1911 in Westmoreland, Oneida, NY.⁽⁵⁵⁾ Sarah took in wash and sewing to earn extra income. After her husband left her, she and her son lived the rest of their lives in her father's home. She lived in the rear part of the house. Parents: Garner Jones and Lucy Ingraham.

She was married to George Washington Carpenter on 25 Oct 1854.⁽¹⁷⁾ I have not found any further record of George W. Carpenter, other than the marriage record and an 1855 census listing. By 1860, Sarah and her child are living on the family farm with her mother and her sister's family. The family's verbal history states that George left Sarah to "go to sea" and a "sea chest" in possession of this part of the family is said to have been sent back to the family, presumably after his death. The 1875 NYS census seems to support the family verbal history, in that Sarah is said to be currently married (not widowed or divorced) on this census record. Children were: Ferdinand Norris Carpenter.

Sybil Jones was born on 22 Apr 1735 in Coventry, Tolland, CT.⁽³⁴⁾ He (or she) died on 29 Aug 1740 in Coventry, Tolland, CT.⁽³⁴⁾ Parents: Benjamin Jones and Patience Evarts.

Thomas Jones was born on 8 Jun 1655 in Springfield, Hampden, MA.⁽¹⁴⁾ Parents: Griffith Jones and Sarah.

He was married to Elizabeth Graves on 31 Aug 1682 in Springfield, Hampden, MA.⁽¹⁶⁾⁽²⁷⁾ Children were: Elizabeth Jones.
