William Henry Gerling was born on 31 Aug 1864 in Fort Johnson, Montgomery, NY.⁽³⁾⁽²⁵⁾ ⁽²⁶⁾⁽³⁸⁾ Although William's obituary states that he was born in Amsterdam, he was most likely born in Fort Johnson as this is where his family was at this time. He was a factory hand in 1883/84 in Amsterdam, Montgomery, NY.⁽⁴⁰⁾ He resided at 56 Spring street between 1883 and 1891 in Amsterdam, Montgomery, NY.⁽⁴⁰⁾ He was a mill hand between 1884 and 1886 in Amsterdam, Montgomery, NY.⁽⁴⁰⁾ He was a spinner between 1886 and 1891 in Amsterdam, Montgomery, NY.⁽⁴⁰⁾ He died before 1912 in Schenectady, Schenectady, NY. His Sudden Death Removed an Esteemed Schenetadian.

Schenectady, Oct 7 - The sudden death of William Henry Gerling at his home, 1309 Albany street, Saturday, came as a shock to his many friends. Popular and capable, with a host of admirers, his demise has caused general sorrow and regret. Mr. Gerling was born in Amsterdam, August 31, 1864, and was educated in the schools there. For the past four and a half years he had been a resident of Schenectady, being employed for three and a half years as foreman in the Alpha Knitting Mills, and later in the General Electric Works, where he was engaged at the time of his demise.

The departed was a Maccabee and a member of the People's Church. The large number of handsome floral tributes formed an impressive testimonial of the high esteem in which he was held. The funeral was attended Tuesday afternoon from his late residence, the ceremony being conducted by Rev. Dr. George R. Lunn. The Interment was in Park View Cemetery. There survive his wife, two sons, Carl and Henry, of this city; his father and mother of Amsterdam; three sisters, Mrs Thielking, and the Misses Clara and Lillian Gerling, of Amsterdam, and four brothers, Charles, Christopher, Edward and Albert Gerling, also of Amsterdam.

Mathias Hitchcock came to Boston, at age 25, from London on the bark "Susan and Ellen" in the spring of 1635. He first settled in East Haven, Conn., where he was one of the five purchasers of "South End Neck". He was also an original signer of the "foundamental agreement made on the 4th of the fowerth moneth called June, 1639" in the records of New Haven, Conn.

He was fined 5 shillings in 1647 for "a wilful neglect to walk ye round when ye officers called him". In 1648 when "he was too late with eight others in coming to trayning yesterday in the afternoon but they said they was there before the bodye moved which as the Captain said was longer before it moved than it used to be, yet because it hath bine the usiall course to count no man late till the bodye hath been removed, ye court passed it by this time".
