She drank the contents of a two-ounce bottle of carbolic acid, which she had purchased while on the way from her home. Miss Gerling, who has been suffering from melancholia for several years and has been perticularly morose since the death of a sister a year and half ago, left a letter addressed to her only surviving sister, Mrs. Christian Thielking, in which she waid, "I can stand it no longer." She asked that her parents not be told of the manner of her death and that it be kept from the newspapers. The unfortunate young woman left her own home shortly after 9 o'clock this morning and after procuring the poison went to her brother's home on Romeyn avenue. She had scarcely entered the house when she made an excuse that she desired to rearrange some of her clothing and stepped from her sister-in-law's presence into a bedroom. She quickly returned, however, with the announcement that she had taken the carbolic acid. Mrs. Gerling hastily summoned physicians, Dr. Qua, who has been attending Miss Gerling, being the first to arrive and being followed by Dr.s Conant and Collier. The fatal potion quickly performed its work and the physicians could do nothing to counteract its effects or relieve the sufferings of the victim, who was painfully burned about the chin, where the liquid had trickled from the mouth of the bottle when she placed it to her lips. Death ensued shortly before 10 o'clock. Dr. Howard W. Murphy, the coroner, who was immediately called learned the circumstances of the case, and after reading the letter which had been left by the young woman, had it turned over to the one to whom it had been addressed. Miss Gerling is survived by her parents, four brothers, Chris, Charles, Edward and Albert, and one sister, Mrs. Thielking, all of this city. Arrangements for the funeral have not yet been completed. ******************** She was never married. Parents: Henry Gerling and Katherine Myers. |
