bulletJohn Cowles died in Sep 1675 in Hatfield, MA. The first substantial record of John is in a list of the first property owners of Farmington in 1645. Farmington was at that time 16 miles in extent from north to south and 12 miles in width. The first homes were rude log cabins, but by 1645 or '46 a saw mill was in operation. By 1666, John owned 107 acres in Farmington.

John served one year as constable for Farmington; was one of the seven pillars of the Congregational Church organized in 1652; deputy for Farmington to the General Court in 1653-4.

In 1656, John moved to Hartford, CT and in 1660 he was one of the first families to settle in Hatfield, CT. However, he soon returned to Hartford, and was provided several warnings to the effect that if he and his family did not remove to Hatfield, he would forfeit his allotment of land. It is reasonable to suremis that his famiy were loath to settle in the wilderness at Hatfield, infested by treacherous Indians. If so, their fears were fully realized by subsequent events, for Hatfield was attacked by the Indians in 1675-7 and partly destroyed by fire, some of the inhabitants were massacred and a few others were taken as captives into Canada.

By 1663, John had planted corn on his allotment in Hatfield, and by 1665 his family is also there.

He was made a freeman in 1666 and was one of Hatfield's first selectmen in 1670. He was again on of the seven pillars for a church, this time in Hatfield in 1670-1.

John gave his land, including the corn and cattle, as well as his household to his wife Hannah, however, the rest of the moveable estate he gave to his son Samuel. Many husbands only left the household goods to their widows, with provisions for their sons to care for their mother.

After John's death, Hannah returned to CT to live with her son-in-law Capt. Caleb Stanley, at Hartford.
