Shingle making provided needed occupation for the early settlers at Morehouse, who had come with such great promise of lush farmlands only to find a short growing season and rough, rocky soil. These products of their hands were carted heavily to Utica and Little Falls, and provisions brought back in the wagons. Adell Maheux was known to make the tiresome journey over the roughest of roads down through Jerseyfield to deliver the shingles to market at Little Falls.

bullet Thomas Bliss was born about 1590 in Painswick, Goucester, Eng. He died in 1650 in Hartford, Hartford, CT. By 1640, Thomas Bliss and his family resided in Hartford, CT. In 1647 he was fined for being missing from military training. Thus, in this year he was likely to be under 60 years of age, but from the ages of his children he was probably over 50. At the time of his death he was considered a "Goodman" which is roughly one step below the class of a "Gentleman".

Thomas had not a written will but recited it orally to his wife and daughter, Mary Parsons as provided in this account:

Mary Parsons of Springfield the daughter of Thomas Bliss late of Harford deceased, doth testify, that when her father lay on his death bed she heard her mother ask him, how he would dispose of his estate, he answered he would give it to her, who should have it else, her mother asked him if he would not dispose of it to his children, her father answered again no, her mother should have it, this she shall be ready to testify if called thereunto.

Note that at this day and age, it was highly unusual for the husband to leave any possesions other than household goods to his wife. Usually the children were required to provide for their mother until her death, and she was allowed to continue to live in the house, but the house and land normally went to one of the male children or son-in-laws.

The court allowed Margaret the full power to administer the estate "if she so long continue a widow". Some of her children had already settled at Springfied at the time of Thomas' death and Margaret wasted no time taking over the management of her husband's estate, and moved with her younger children to Springfield. Before moving she sued William Ayers for the unlawful detaing and wrongful selling of her cow. In Springfield she was granted a total of 41 acres of land split into various parcels at different locations.

In her will, again unusual for a woman, she gave her children various portions of her estate, with the majority of her land, cattle and the house to go to her son Samuel. However, she also provided that if her daughter-in-law, Mary, wife of Samuel survives Samuel, then she is to retain 1/3 of the land during her widowhood, and then return it to her sons, as Samuel sees fit to bestow it on them.

Margaret proved to be an able manager of her husband's estate, as it was inventoried at approximately three times the amount left to her.
