bullet Thomas Welles Gov. was born about 1590 in Stourton, Whichford, Warwick, Eng. (1)(31) He died on 14 Jan 1659/60 in Wethersfield, Hartford, CT. (1)(31) The following is taken directly from the "Biographical Directory of American Colonial and Revolutionary Governors 1607-1789", by John W. Raimo, Meckler Books:

********************

Immigrated to New England, probably in late 1635, and had settled in Boston, Massachusetts by June 1636. Moved to Hartford, Connecticut a short time later, where he lived until he moved to Wethersfield following his second marriage. Named an Assistant of the Connecticut Beneral Court in 1637, an office which he held until his death. Chosen Treasurer of Connecticut in 1639, and served for two years; also acted as treasurer from 1648 to 1652. Served as Secretary of the colony from April 1640 to 1648. Became a Commissioner of the United Colonies in 1649 and again in 1659, filling that office on each occasion for a term of one year. Elected Deputy Governor of Connecticut on a yearly basis in 1654 (when he also served as chief executive in the absence of Bovernor Hopkins), 1656, 1657 and 1659; elected Governor in 1655 and 1658.

During the 1650's Welles was perhaps the most prominent political figure in Connecticut, especially after the death of John Haynes in January 1654 and the departure of Edward Hopkins for England a short time earlier. Welles' years as chief executive were most noeworthy for the divisions which disrupted several of the colony's Congregational churches. Indeed, in the 1650's a schism had split the church in the governor's own home town of Wethersfield. Although the General Court was unsuccessful in its attempt to restore peace, the matter had resolved itself by the end of Welles' second period in office, when dissenting members from the affected congregations united to establish their own church in Hadley, Massachusetts, further up the Connecticut River.

Following his service as chief executive, Welles was reelected deputy governor in the spring of 1659, but he did not live to complete the term. He died in Wethersfield, Connecticut on January 14, 1660, and was probably buried in that community.

From the Welles genealogy (see date references), when King Charles II fled for his life from Cromwell's forces across the country to eventual exile in France, he stayed one night at Alice's half brother's Inn, desguised as a servant and accompanied by a few friends. He nearly revealed himself in his clumsiness with the roasting jack, but spent the night in peace at the Tomes' home and pursued their flight in the morning.

The Welles family in Warwicshire extended back at least four generations and owned property, but were not listed as gentlemen (or landed gentry). The information in the Welles genealogy referenced herein, appears to be of the highest quality research on the Welles family and provides information regarding significant genealogical errors in previous works on this family. Parents: Robert Welles and Alice.

He was married to Alice Tomes in Jul 1615 in Long Marston, Gloucester, England. (1)(31) Children were: John Welles, Thomas Welles, Samuel Welles Hon. & Capt., Mary Welles, Ann Welles, Sarah Welles .

He was married to Elizabeth Deming about 1646. (1)(31)

bullet Thomas Welles died in Aug 1558 in Stourton, Whichford, Warwick, Eng. (1) According to the genealogy of the Welles family by Donna Holt Siemiatkoski (see death reference): Thomas was perhaps the son of Robert Wellys, who was taxed at Whichford in 1523; known to have been the brother of Walter Welles of Tredington and Tidmington, Worcestershire.

He was married to Elizabeth before 1540. (1) Children were: Robert Welles.

She was married to William Stook in 1890 in Ava, Oneida, NY.(128) This article states that they were married in 1880. However, William and Carrie each had children by seperate spouses around 1882! One of these boys may have moved to Indiana as, Ettie, a daughter of Peter, was photographed with some other people with an inscription of "Ettie and her cousins from Indiana" Parents: Schirmer Johannes Konrad Wolf and Charlotta Schaetzel.

He was married to Maria Magdalena Schmidt on 26 Dec 1815 in Erlenbrunn, Pfalz, Bavaria, Germany. (11)(129) In their marriage record in the church, Heinrich Wolf is stated to be 23 yrs old, and Magdaline Schmidt to be 22 yrs of age and that she is the daughter of Philip Schmidt, Grenadier. There was a large garrison stationed at Pirmasens.

Their civil marriage occured a couple weeks later, on 18 Jan 1816 in Niedersimten. This record is kept in the Civil Registrar of Pirmasens-Land. In this record it states that Heinrich Wolf, 22 years old, day laborer, born and resident of Erlenbrunn, son of Johannes Wolf and Charlotta Schaetzel, resident in Erlenbrunn, married Magdalena Schmitt, 22 years old, daughter of the deceased Johann Philipp Schmitt and deceased Anna Barbara Andis (Antes). bullet Heinrich "Henry Jacob" Wolf Jr. was born on 26 Oct 1824 in Erlenbrunn, Pfalz, Bavaria, Germany.(11) (108)(130) Although the family sketch from the history of Oneida county states that Henry was born on the 28th of October, his birth record in the Lutheran church in Pirmasens states that he was born on the 27th and the civil records in Pirmasens states that he was born on the 26th at 10pm and that his birth was registered on the 27th at 1pm! He applied through a Declaration of Intent to become a citizen of the US on 10 Feb 1852 in Utica, Oneida, NY.(49) The following information is on Henry's Declaration of Intention papers:

Henry Wolf, born in Baden, owes his allegiance to Germany, migrated from Havre, settled in Ava. His signature is definitely Heinrich Wolf. Dated 10 Feb 1852.

He died in 1901 in prob. Ava, Oneida, NY.(32) He was buried in West Leyden Cemetery, West Leyden, Lewis, NY. (32) From "Our Country and it's People, Oneida County, NY", edited by Daniel E. Wagner, published by the Boston History Company, 1896:

********************

Wolf, Henry, was born in Bavaria, October 28, 1824, son of Henry and Magdaline (Schmidt) Wolf, both natives of Bavaria where they lived and died. Bother father and grandfather were farmers in Germany. Henry Wolf, jr., came to America in August, 1849, and settled in Ava, where he has always resided, commencing as a farm hand. He woon bought 220 acres of land, 120 of which he cleared. In 1852 he married Catherine Traxel, daughter of Jacob Traxel, of Ava, by whom he had five children: Carloine S., Henry J., William C., and Katie, who died in infancy. Mrs. Wolf died April 28, 1893. In 1891 Mr. Wolf sold the farm to his son William C.

********************

One interesting fact that I've found while researching both the Wolf and Traxel lines is that they both originate from the same small region in Germany. Several Traxel brothers and/or cousins were born in Erlenbrunn or neighboring villages in the Pirmasens parish and emigrated in different years to settle near each other in Ava and West Leyden (Lewis Twp, Lewis County).

In the family history of Peter Wolf of Ava, Peter is said to be the brother of Henry's and that four brothers came to the US. However, church records show that Peter is a brother of Henry's father! Also, one source indicates that Henry's father died in Germany. So, are the 4 brothers in the verbal history really brothers, and our Henry came along later or is our Henry one of the supposed brothers?

Parents: Heinrich Wolf Sr. and Maria Magdalena Schmidt.

He was married to Catherine C. Traxel in 1852 in prob. Ava, Oneida, NY. (108) Children were: Katie Wolf, Caroline S. Wolf, Jacob Henry Wolf, Henry Jacob Wolfe III, William C. Wolff.

He was married to Flora Loretta Gleasman on 12 Mar 1885 in Rome, Oneida, NY. (128) The following articles were written about the turmoil that this couple went through near the time of their wedding day:

********************
From the Boonville Herald, 12 Mar 1885:

A Match Smashed.

An Ava Wedding Indefinitely Postponed - Disappointed the Swain Sighs for His Sweetheart.

A correspondent writes that considreable talk has been occasioned in Ava and the neighboring village of West Leyden, by the breaking up of a match just as it was about to culminate in marriage. Jacob Wolff, a young farmer aged about 25, is a son of Henry Wolff and lives with his father on a farm between Ava Corners and West Leyden. He has for some years been keeping company with a comely young lady named Flora Gleasman, aged about 21, daughter of Chrisjohn Gleasman, who lives about three miles from here on the Boonville road. Mr. Wolff's father is rich and Mr. Gleasman is in very comfortable circumstances. Jacob and Flora were to have been married on Wednesday, but at the last moment the ceremony was indefinitely postponed by Miss Gleasman's refusal to carry out her part of the contract. All the preliminaries for the wedding had been arranged and Mr. Wolff's brother Henry and a lady friend were to act as best man and bridesmaid on the festive occasion. This is a region of sudden and heavy snow storms and in order to avoid all chance of a blockade, the expectant groom betook himself to Miss Gleasman's domicile on Tuesday evening, so as to be on hand in the morning. What occurred after his arrival is not definitely known, but it is known that on Wednesday morning Miss Gleasman broke the engagement and refused to marry Mr. Wolff. Of course there was nothing for the disappointed man to do except to swallow the lump in his throat and hasten to tell his people of the change in the situation of affairs.

It is said that Miss Gleasman's father was the means of breaking off the match. He came to this village to vote on Tuesday and while here met a relative from West Leyden. It is alleged that the relative advised Mr. Gleasman not to allow his daughter to marry Wolff for certain reasons which he mentioned. The young woman's father, it seems, followed this advice and shut down on the wedding. It is said that this is not Wolff's first experience of this nature. If report is true a former engagement with Miss Gleasman was broken off. It is also said that a young woman whom he was about to marry last fall jilted him. He is feeling very badly over the breaking off of this last match. He says: "You can't believe anything a girl says now-a-days." The boys are having considerable fun over the matter, but it is anything but funny to poor Wolff.

********************
From the Boonville Herald, 18 Mar 1885:

A reconciliation was made between the parties most interested in the Wolff-Gleasman episode of last week, as noted in The Herald. They were united in marriage last Thursday and passed thro' this place enroute to visit relatives in Vernon. It appears the reconciliation was brought about through the intervention of both Mr. Wolff and Miss Gleasman, which caused the father of the young lady to give his consent to the marriage.
