********************

The Advocate Democrat, Marysville, Marshall, KS, Thursday, 10 Nov 1904, page 5, col 2:

William Temple, Sr. was born at Wilton, England, July 17, 1824, died at Marysville, KS Nov. 5, 1904, aged 80 years, 3 months and 19 days.

In 1859, he was married to Mary Netherill. In 1879 he, with his family, came to Kansas, and after living two years at Seneca took up his residence at Marysville, where he spent the remaining years of his life.

He leaves his campanion and five children-Martha, Thomas, James, Joseph and William, to mourn the loss of a kind husband and father.

Brother Temple was brought up in the Church of England, but has been a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church since 1866, when he joined that church at Westmoreland, N.Y. He loved to talk about the great meetings he enjoyed in his old home in the east and longed to witness again such demonstrations of God's saving power.

For many months his strength has been failing while his soul has been ripening for his translation. His confidence was strong in Christ his savior and no fears darkened his moral sky. He often expressed the desire to depart to be with Christ and to see again the three children who have preceded him to the better land, beside whose sleeping dust at Wesmoreland N.Y. his own body is to rest until the resurrection morning.

The funeral services were conducted at the ME Church Sunday morning by the Rev. Urner.

In the 1855 NYS census, they are married and their daughter Martha is 2 years old, so I believe the full date provided in Mary's obituary is likely to be correct. *******************

Christian L. Thielking
Evening Recorder, Amsterdam, Montgomery, NY - 7 Mar 1940

Christian L. Thielking, 78, died suddenly at his home, 53 Arnold Ave., last night at 7:30 o'clock. Although he had not been feeling well since November, he had seemed in his usual health yesterday and had dined with his family. Shortly afterward he suffered an attack of thrombosis and death followed.

He was born in Hille - Westfallen, Germany, Nov 17, 1861, a son of John H. Thielking and Louisa Corse. Coming to America at the age of 19, he first located in NYC, where he lived for two years before moving to this city. A broommaker by occupation, he was employed for many years by The American Broom and Brush Company here, later being for a time with the Pioneer Broom Company. In 1921 he gave up active labor due to heart trouble and led a retired life since.

He was a member of St Luke's English Lutheran Church and in his younger years was affiliated with several of the city's fraternal organizations. Known for his honorable dealings and for his thoughtfulness, Mr Thielking had many friends here. His principle interest was in his home and family.

In September, 1893, he married Caroline Gerling in this city. She survives, together with a daughter, Miss Leila M. and Raymond A, this city; two grandson's, David and Roger, and several nieces and nephews.

*******************
He was buried in Fair View Cemetery, Amsterdam, Montgomery, NY. Christian was born at Hille, #368, on 17 Nov 1861. He went to public school until 14 years old and was confirmed at Galenbeck in the Lutheran Church. He worked out as a hired man for a farmer until he was 21. Then when his brother, Henry was finished with his draft service, Christian was to be drafted into the army. The army did not take a widow's sole support, thus Christian had not been drafted at the usual age of 18.

He told his mother he would not go into the army and she said she didn't blame him. He told her he was going to America, but she said she could not give him any money. So, in October 1882, Christian left Germany, in order to escape the draft by leaving at night and crossing the border into Holland. He slept in a barn and worked for a Belgian farmer to earn breakfast. He went to Antwerp and took a ship over to London, working his passage over. He stayed in London for 3 weeks, taking care of horses for the wealthy in the mews of London.

He left London and crossed over to Liverpool, again caring for horses while he waited for a chance to work his passage over to America. He landed at Castle Garden, New York City, in 1884, after 6 weeks on the water. Unable to speak English and without any money, he found a job with the truck gardeners at Castle Garden the same day. He stayed there until July and then went to Schenectady and hired out to a farmer the same day again.

The next year he moved to Visschers Ferry, worked for a farmer where he had to sleep up in an attic where the snow blew in on him at night. The following year he came back to Schenectady and got found a job in Bronsons Broom factory. He only worked there a year when he had an opportunity to drive a herd of cows from Schenectady to Mill Point for a farmer named Schondorf.

He heard about the opportunities for work in the broom factories in Amsterdam and started in Blood's Broom Factory and learned to wind brooms, which he did for 30 years. He met Caroline Gerling in the German Lutheran Church and married her. At first they lived upstairs in her parents house on Spring St, where the Jr. High School now stands. Later, in 1894, he bought a lot on Arnold Ave in Amsterdam and built his own house from a 'kit'. The house was finished in 1897 and he and his wife lived there the rest of their
lives.

He taught himself to read and write English by reading newspapers and 2 books... 'Juliette' and 'Down the Great River'. He applied for citizenship on 9 July 1887 and was Naturalized 5 years after entering this country, on 26 Oct 1889.

Apparently a neice of Christian's and her husband, Albert and Frieda Stekeur, the daughter of Christian's sister, immigrated at a later date, as her name is in the funeral book of Christian's wife.
