Boyes Temple was born on 25 Jul 1837 in Wilton, North Riding, York, England.
(111)(17)
The Webster genealogy, published in 1915, has his birth year as 1838.
This is apparently the year in which George thought he was born. However, the
birth records of the parish in Wilton provide the year 1837. He probably confused
his date of birth with the remembrance that he was 12 when he came to the US
in 1850. He arrived before his birth date of that year and turned 13 shortly
after immigrating! His younger sister who was born the year after, also confused
her birth year in the same manner. He was christened on 28 Jul 1837 in Ellerburn
Parish, North Riding, York, England.(111)
He immigrated in 1850 to Westmoreland (town of), Oneida, NY.
(38) He was a carpenter and farmer in 1855 in Westmoreland (town of),
Oneida, NY.(39) In 1855, George was still
living with his parents. He was a blacksmith between 1860 and 1866 in Stanwix,
Oneida, NY.(5)
(3) In 1860, George was living with his parents and his older brother,
John R., who was a blacksmith in Stanwix. He was listed as a blacksmith in this
census, which confirms the information from his obituary, that he learned the
trade from his brother. He applied through a Declaration of Intent to become
a citizen of the US on 18 Oct 1860 in Utica, Oneida, NY.
(49) The following information is listed on George's Declaration of
Intention papers:
George B. Temple, born in Ireland, age 22, owes his allegiance to Great Britain, migrated from Liverpool, England, place of actual or intended settlement is Rome, NY, signed on 18 Oct 1860. He was a farmer between 1866 and 1912 in Bartlett, Oneida, NY. (25)(26) (38)(112) (3)(113) (114)(115) (116) By 1870, George had married Everancy, "Eva", Jones and had taken over the operation of her parents 98 acre farm. He supported his mother-in-law and his sister-in-law and her son who continued to live on the farm, until their deaths. He retired in 1912 in Bartlett, Oneida, NY. (3) After he retired, George, his wife, Eva, and daughter, Mabel all moved to Westmoreland, Oneida, NY. Although George was retired and living in a house in the village center of Westmoreland, he was listed as a farmer in the 1920 census. He died on 25 Jan 1940 in Westmoreland, Oneida, NY. (52)(32) His obituary reads: ******************** most likely from a Rome newspaper: Westmoreland GEO. B. TEMPLE, 101, DIES AT HIS HOME ---------- Native of England Was Oldest Resident of Town ---------- BARTLETT FARMER FOR 46 YEARS ---------- Voted for Lincoln in 1860; Rites Wednesday ---------- Westmoreland, Feb 26 - George B. Temple, who would have been 102 years old on July 25 next, oldest resident of the Town of Westmoreland, died Sunday at his home here after an illness of several weeks. He had lived in the vicinity of Westmoreland and Bartlett for 77 years. Mr. Temple was 12 years old when his parents, John and Margaret Thompson Temple left Wilton, Yorkshire, England, his birthplace, for America. They travelled in a sailing boat, and Mr. Temple recalled that it took four weeks and five days to reach New York. The vessel encountered rough sailing and drifted aimlessly for days. The Temples landed in New York City and entrained for Utica, where they were met by Mrs. Temple's aunt, Mrs. James Wetherel of Westmoreland. They journeyed to her home in a horse and buggy. Learned Blacksmith Trade Mr. Temple was next to the youngest of a family of five boys, and his brother John Temple jr., was a blacksmith, operating a shop at Stanwix. George learned the trade from his brother and followed it until he married Mess Everancy A. Jones of Bartlett on March 9, 1866, just after the Civil War. He operated a 98-acre farm at Bartlett from 1866 until 1912, when he retired and moved with his wife to Westmoreland, Mrs. Temple died in 1925 and since that time Mr. Temple had resided with their daughter, Mabel. In 1865 Mr. Temple went to the local recruiting station to enlist with the Union Army, but the war was about over and he did not go away. Voted for Lincoln Mr. Temple voted for Abraham Lincoln when he sought the office of president in 1860 and was always a staunch Republican. He attended Hampton Institute when a young man and attended Bartlett Baptist Church. Surviving are two daughters, Miss Mabel Temple at home, and Mrs. Adella Wolfe, Bartlett; three grandchildren, Mrs. Ernestine W. Richards, Herkimer; Clarence F. Wolfe, Bartlett; and Miss Elta A. Wolfe, Rome; five great grandchildren, Lois, Jean and Dorothy Wolfe, Bartlett, and Beverly and Marilyn Richards, Herkimer; and several nieces and nephews. The Rev. George Upham, pastor of Bartlett Baptist Church, will officiate at funeral services to be held Wednesday at 2 p.m. at his late home and interment will be made in Westmoreland Cemetery. ******************** NOTE: The only incorrect information that I have found as yet are the following: The Aunt to whom the family came to in Westmoreland was George's Aunt, a sister of his father John. He was buried in New Westmoreland Cemetery, Westmoreland, Oneida, NY. (32) He was a Baptist and attended Bartlett Baptist Church.(3) The following article was written about George for his 101st birthday, although, he believed that it was his 100th. Both he and his younger sister, Jane, lost track of their exact date of birth and both believed that they were born one year later than they were. The proof of their actual birth dates is the baptismal records from the parish registers from England. This article reads as follows. ******************** most likely from a Rome, Oneida, NY newspaper: G.B.Temple, Westmoreland, Will Mark 100th Birthday Native of England and Retired Bartlett Farmer to Celebrate Natal Day Monday Surrounded by Family. Westmoreland, July 23. - "I feel like chopping wood. We'll have to get that tree down one of these days," George G. Temple told his daughter, Miss Mabel Temple, last week as he pointed to a towering elm in the yard adjoining their Westmoreland home. Centenarian Enjoys Good Health Mr. Temple's penchant for wood-chopping might not be unusual except that he will celebrate his 100th birthday on Monday, July 25. Last winter the sight of Mr. Temple shoveling snow was not an unusual one to villagers. Even though his life has spanned a century, Mr. Temple still enjoys good health and has an insatiable ambition to be up and doing. Time was when he was a regular visitor at the homes of his Westmoreland neighbors. Within the past two years, however, he has remained in the vicinity of his own home, taking only an occasional automobile ride. Native of England He has lived in the vicinity of Westmoreland and Bartlett for 77 years. Mr. Temple was 12 years old when his parents, John and Margaret Thompson Temple left Wilton, Yorkshire, England, his birthplace, for America. They travelled in a sailing boat, and Mr. Temple recalls that it took four weeks and five days to reach New York. The vessel encountered rough sailing and drifted aimlessly for days. The Temples landed in New York City and entrained for Utica, where they were met by Mrs. Temple's aunt, Mrs. James Wetherell of Westmoreland. They journeyed to her home in a horse and buggy. Mr. Temple was next to the youngest of a family of five boys and his brother, John Temple jr., was a blacksmith, operating a shop at Stanwix. George learned the trade from his brother and followed it until he married Miss Everancy A. Jones of Bartlett on March 7, 1866, just after the Civil War. He operated a 98-acre farm at Bartlett from 1866 until 1912, when he retired and moved with his wife to Westmoreland. Mrs. Temple died in 1925 and since that time Mr. Temple has resided with their daughter, Mabel. In 1865 Mr. Temple went to the local recruiting station to enlist with the Union Army, but the war was about over and he did not go away. Voted for Abraham Lincoln Mr. Temple is emphatically a Republican and has been so down through the years. He is among the few living persons today who voted for Abraham Lincoln when he sought the presidency in 1859. He expressed the hope that he will be able to vote in the fall election. Although his hearing is somewhat impaired now, Mr. Temple at one time was an enthusiastic radio fan. He still reads newspapers and periodicals, but to a limited extent as his eyesight has failed considerably. Mr. Temple does not smoke, chew or dring, but does not attribute his long life to these abstentions. Observing his birthday with him Monday will be two daughters, Miss Temple and Mrs. Adella Wolfe, Bartlett; three grandchildren, Mrs. Will O. Richard, Herkimer; Clarence Wolfe, Bartlett, and Miss Elta Wolfe, Rome; and five great-granchildren, Lois, Jean and Dorothy Wolfe, Bartlett, and Beverly and Marilyn Richar, Herkimer. ******************** In the above article, the aunt to whom George's family first came to in Westmoreland was George's aunt; a sister of his father, not his mother's aunt. Another article reads as follows. ******************** most likely from a Utica, Oneida, NY newspaper: Westmoreland Man Becomes Centenarian Today Rome - George B. Temple of Westmoreland will be 100 years old today and does not attribute his long life to anything in particular. Three generations will be on hand to congratulate the husky son of England. They are his two daughters, Miss Mable Temple, with whom he lives, and Mrs. Adella Wolfe, Bartlett; three grandchildren, Mrs. W. O. Richard, Herkimer; Clarence Wolfe, Bartlett, and Miss Elta Wolfe, Rome, and five great-grandchildren, Lois, Jean and Dorothy Wolfe, Bartlett, and Beverly and Marilyn Richard, Herkimer. He was born at Wilton, Yorkshire, England, July 25, 1838, and with his parents, John and Margaret Thompason Temple, came to the United States in a sailing boat 12 years later. The other Temple children, William, John, Joseph, Thomas, and James also made the trip. It took four weeks and five days, the ship having encountered rough weather and drifted aimlessly for days. The family settled in the Town of Westmoreland. George Temple followed the blacksmith trade until his marriage to Everancey A. Jones of Bartlett on Mar. 7, 1866. Mr. Temple operated a farm at Bartlett from 1866 until 1912 when he retired with his wife, moved to Westmoreland. Mrs. Temple died in 1925 and her husband has since lived with his daughter. Mr. Temple voted for Abraham Lincoln when the great emancipator first sought the presidency in 1859. He always has been a staunch Republican. He reads, listens to the radio, takes an occasional automobile ride and has a penchant for chopping wood. His sister discourages the wood-chopping pastime as a bit too arduous for a man so advanced in years. ******************** In the above article, the other Temple children were William, John, Joseph, Thomas and Jane (not James). Also, it's his daughter who discourages the wood-chopping, not his sister and at this time he is the last surviving child of John and Margaret Thompson (not Thompason) Temple. Parents: John Temple and Margaret Thompson. He was married to Everancy Amelia Jones on 7 Mar 1866 in Bartlett, Oneida, NY. (44)(17) Children were: Adella Diana Temple, Mabel Vernette Temple.

John
Temple was born before 29 Jan 1729 in Ebberston parish, North Riding, York,
England.(46) He was christened on 29
Jan 1729 in Ebberston parish, North Riding, York, England.
(46) He was a joiner in 1761 in Ebberston parish, North Riding, York,
England.(46) All relationships based
solely on the parish records of Ebberston prior to 1770 are suspect, as the information
from these records are rather scant. In particular, this John and his brother
Thomas each had a son (born about 1 year apart) whom they named John. Either
of these children may have been the father of John Temple who married Margaret
Yeoman. From John and Margaret Yeoman Temple and after, the relationships are
solid.
The assumption I made to determine the relationships contained herein, was simply that the first son was named after the child's grandfather. However, these relationships should be proven through other sources to be assured that they are correct. Parents: Johannis Temple and Susanna Rogers. He was married to Ann Hodgson on 10 May 1761 in Ebberston parish, North Riding, York, England. (46) Children were: John Temple, Thomas Temple, George Temple, Martin Temple, Esther Temple, Milcah Temple, Jane Temple. John

Ann Hodgson. He was married to Margaret Yeoman on 5 Feb 1792 in Ebberston parish, North Riding, York, England. (46) Children were: Jane Temple, John Temple, William Temple, Ann Temple, Mary Temple, Joseph Temple, Alexander Temple. John
Temple was born in 1796 in Wilton, North Riding, York, England.
(46) He was christened on 17 Jan 1796 in Ebberston parish, North Riding,
York, England.(46) He was a carpenter
/ wheelwright between 19 Apr 1821 and 1829 in Wilton, North Riding, York, England.
(111) He is listed as carpenter on his children's
birth records. In the online transcript of the entry of "professions and
trades" for EBBERSTON in Baines's Directory of 1823, there is: Temple John,
wheelwright. Is this our John Temple, or his father, or another altogether?
Likely it's his father, as our John Temple was christened in Ebberston parish.
He was a joiner between 1833 and 1839 in Wilton, North Riding, York, England.
(111) He was a cartwright / wheelwright in
1840 in Ebberston parish, North Riding, York, England. From the online transcript
of the entry of "professions and trades" for EBBERSTON in White's Directory
of 1840: lists "John Temple and Son, cartwrights." Also listed in
the online ranscript of the entry of "professions and trades" for WILTON
in White's Directory of 1840 is John Temple, wheelwright. Are they one in the
same, or different families! Likely the John Temple of Wilton is our John Temple,
as his children were all born in Wilton and christined in Ellerburne parish.
He immigrated in 1850 to Westmoreland (town of), Oneida, NY. At first they
lived with John's sister Jane and her husband James Weatherel for a short time,
where they are found on the 1850 census in Westmoreland Twp, Oneida, NY. From
family verbal history, the Weatheral's farm was located in the village of Walesville.
They brought most of their children with them, except for Mary and Thompson.
Mary was already married by this time. However, Mary and her family may have
come at a later date, as two of her children, William Bailey and John Temple
Bailey, show up in NY census records with John's family. Also, Mary's husband,
William, her daughter, Elizabeth, and son William, Jr. all show up on some land
record transactions in Oneida Co., which apparently was land that John owned
and was split among the family after his death.
He was a carpenter in 1850 in Westmoreland (town of), Oneida, NY. (4) He was a farmer in 1855 in Westmoreland (town of), Oneida, NY. (39) By the 1855 NYS census, John's two eldest sons, William and John, were no longer living with their parents. William had a farm also in Westmoreland, and it is presumed that John had set up his blacksmith shop in Stanwix. John's grandson, Thomas Bailey, is living with John and his family at this time. He owned on 26 Dec 1856 in Stanwix, Oneida, NY. (42) He was a carpenter between 1860 and 1870 in Stanwix, Oneida, NY.(5)(25) At the time of the 1860 census, John, his wife and unmarried children were all living with his eldest son, John R. Temple, who was a blacksmith in Stanwix. George was also listed as a blacksmith in this census. A grandson, John Temple Bailey was also living with the family. In the 1870 census, John has his own place, and his son, Joseph, is the only child still living with John. Also, his grandson, John Temple Bailey is still living with him. John and Margaret Temple were both members of the Methodist Episcopal Church in Rome, Oneida, NY. He died on 29 Jul 1875 in Stanwix, Oneida, NY. Parents: John Temple and Margaret Yeoman. He was married to Margaret Thompson on 8 Jan 1821 in Great Edston, North Riding, York, England.(12) On their marriage record, John is listed to be "of the parish of Wilton". Children were: Mary Temple, William Temple, John R. Temple, Thompson Temple, Joseph Y. Temple, Jane Temple, George Boyes Temple, Jane A. Temple. John
R. Temple was born on 29 Jul 1826 in Wilton, North Riding, York, England.

About thirty-six years ago he married Miss Hannah Jones of this city. Mr. Temple was a blacksmith by trade and a very skillful one. His work was so well done that his trade was not confined to the immediate vicinity of Stanwix but he numbered among his patrons many who lived at a distance. One of the secrets of his success was that whatever he undertook to do he did to the best of his ability, winning an enviable reputation. As a husband, parent, neighbor and friend he was ever faithful, and he was held in high esteem. He was an earnest member of the First M.E. Church, attending whenver he was able, but since retiring from active work about twelve years ago he has been in poor health. In politics Mr. Temple was a lifelong Republican and he took great pride in the fact that he cast his first vote for Fremont. He always took more or less active interest in politics in his quiet way but never sought nor would he accept any political office. ******************** He was buried in Stanwix Cemetery, Stanwix, Oneida, NY.
