Mrs. Henry Horstman.

Mrs. Anna, wife of Henry Horstman of Fort Hunter, died last evening after a brief illness, aged 23 years. She was the daughter of Conrad Minch of Fort Hunter. Besides her father Mrs. Horstman is survived by her husband and two children, one an infant, 3 sisters, Mrs. Henry Fink, Mrs. Ferdinand Creigmus, Miss Carrie Minch, and one brother, Henry Minch. Mrs. Horstman was a member of the Geman Methodist Church of Fort Hunter. She had a wide circle of friends who will be pained to learn of her death. The funeral will be held from the German Methodist Church ar Fort Hunter saturday afternoon at 1:30 o'clock, Rev. Philip Stahl officiating.

Anna was born in Mill Point and baptized in the Lutheran church of Ft Plain; both villages are in Montgomery County, NY. When 15 years old she lost her mother, Susannah (see Susannah Lehr Minch's obituary). By the 1892 NYS Census, she was married to Henry and had her first child. She died only a month after the birth of her second child. Parents: Conrad Minch and Susannah Lehr.

She was married to Henry August Horstmann about 1888 in prob. Fort Hunter, Montgomery, NY. After Anna's death, Henry remarried and had a third child in the town of Florida, Montgomery County. However, only a short time later he died of convulsions in the Utica State Hospital, Utica, Oneida County, NY. This hospital was one of the largest mental hospitals in the U.S. at this time. He apparently moved to Schenectady before he was admitted to this institution and his will is located at the Schenectady County Surrogate Court.

After Henry's death, his second wife gave up Anna's children and they lived with their aunt and uncle, Henry and Rose (Bobilin) Minch. However, Rose abused the children and by 1900 they were taken in by other relatives. Fred was lucky in that he was treated decently by his Aunt Carrie and Uncle Anst Bobilin. However, Nettie was not so lucky since she was treated as a servant by her Aunt Isabelle (Belle) and Uncle Henry Fink. The stepmother and third child had moved to Schenectady shortly after Henry's death. In the 1900 Federal Census, they were found in 'The Children's Home' listing, with Emma as an attendant and Irene as an inmate. However, they apparently came back to the area by 1915. Children were: Frederick Conrad Horstman, Nettie Laura Carrie Horstman.

Elizabeth Barbara Minch, wife of Ferdinand J. Criegmus, Bridgeport, Conn., a former resident of Fort Hunter, died Sunday morning in the Amsterdam City Hospital; where she had been a patient since Thursday. She had been in ill health for some time. The previous Saturday she had started on a vacation trip and was visiting Amsterdam when she became seriously ill Thursday.

She was born in Mill Point June 4, 1869, a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Conrad Minch, and lived there until she was 11 years old, when she moved to Fort Hunter, residing in that village for many years, except for a few years spent in Amsterdam. Twenty years ago she went to Bridgeport and had lived there ever since. She was a member of Grace M. E. Church, Bridgeport, and while in Fort Hunter was a member of the Methodist Church there. She was well known in this city and vicinity.

Besides her husband Mrs. Criegmus is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Benjamin Whittaker, Trumbull, Conn.; a son, Charles, Bridgeport; eight grandchildren; one sister, Mrs. Henry Fink, Fort Hunter; one brother, Henry Minch, Fort Hunter, and several nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Anst Bobilin

After an illness of a week of pneumonia the death of Carrie Minch, wife of Anst Bobilin, occurred Tuesday morning, April 3, at her home near Auriesville. She was the daughter of Conrad and Suzanne Minch and was born at Mill Point August 4, 1875. Beside her husband she is survived by four sons, Albert of Fort Plain, John, James and Conrad of Auriesville; two daughters, Mrs. Milton Smith and Lena Bobilin of Auriesville; two sisters, Mrs. Henry Fink of Fort Hunter and Mrs. Ferdinand Creigmuss of Bridgeport, Conn. and one brother, Henry Minch of Fort Hunter and three grandchildren.

The funeral was held Thursday afternoon at 1 o'clock at the home, the Rev. John D. Pape and the Rev. William Schlenter of Fort Hunter officiating. Interment was at Pine Grove cemetery. Tribes Hill. The bearers were members of the family.

Mrs. Bobilin was a woman of genial and loving disposition, possessed of a keen and motherly interest in her home. She was a member of the German Methodist church of Fort Hunter and a loyal and ardent worker in all its interests. The floral tributes at the funeral were many and beautiful, attesting the esteem in which Mrs. Bobilin was held. They included a pillow lettered "Mother", from the family; a casket bouquet of calla lillies, C.S.C; casket bouquet of tulips, Glen grange; casket bouquet of daffodils, Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Foody; pink carnations, Ethel Skinner; white carnations, Mr. and Mrs. Ferdinand Creigmuss; hyacinths, Mr. and Mrs. Harold Thielking and Fred Horstman; smilax and pink carnations, Norma Bowhall and Helen Bowhall Harris; pink carnations, Mr. and Mrs. Harry Ackeley, Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Olmstead; daffodils, A. A FATAL ACCIDENT.

Conrad Minch of Fort Hunter
Killed on the West Shore

In the Yankee Hill cut this afternoon
- Particulars of the casualty -

He was a prominent citizen and a hay buyer by occupation.

The West bound New York express, train No. 2, on the West Shore, due in this city at 2:48, struck and instantly killed Conrad Minch of Fort Hunter just west of the depot in the Yankee Hill cut, this afternoon.

Mr. Minch came to this city today and intended to return home on the train which killed him, but upon applying at the depot for a ticket, he was told that the train, which is a fast one, did not stop at Fort Hunter. Wishing to return home before night, and not caring to wait, he started up the tracks on foot, intending to walk home. The train came along in a few minutes, and, as it was rounding the curve in the cut, Mr. Minch was struck in the back of the head and instantly killed. The train was stopped and the remains put on board and brought back to the depot, where they were placed in the baggage room to await the disposition of Coroner Johnson, who was at once summoned. Upon the Coroner's examination it was found that death was due to a fracture in the rear portion of the skull. It is not believed that he suffered any other injuries. The remains were ordered removed to the under taking rooms of C. A. Lutton.

Mr. Minch resided in Fort Hunter, near the West Shore station, and was a hay buyer, being in business with his son Henry, who survives him, together with three daughters, Mrs. Henry Fink, Mrs. Ferdinand Creigmus, and Mrs. Anst Bobilin, all of Fort Hunter. He was about 60 years old and for a number of years worked the farm of Rev. J. H. Enders. He was a prominent member of the Fort Hunter German Methodist Church, being one of the trustees. Another daughter, Mrs. Henry Horstman, died a short time ago. His father, who also survives him, lives in Fort Plain.

However, Conrad and Susanna married in 1862 in Carbon County, PA, where Susanna was born. Conrad's brother, Martin, purchased land in Fort Plain (village), Minden TWP, Montgomery County, NY in 1867. By1864, Conrad and his family lived in Mill Point, Glen Twp, Montgomery, NY. The family moved to Fort Hunter, Montgomery, NY before 1884 and possibly as early as 1877. In 1890, Conrad purchased property in Fort Hunter, Florida TWP, Montgomery County, NY. While in Fort Hunter, Conrad's occupation was a 'hay buyer'. His son, Henry, joined his father in this business and continued in his name after his father's death. Parents: Heinrich Minch and Anna.

He was married to Susannah Lehr on 15 Jan 1862 in Carbon County, PA. (61)(65) On their marriage record, Conrad is of North Whitehall, Lehigh, PA and Susanna is of East Penn, Lehigh, PA Children were: Henry Francis Minch, Isabella Sophia Minch, Barbara Elisabeth Minch , Anna Catharina Minch, Mary Minch, Carrie C. Minch.

Henry Minch, aged 89 years, died at the residence of John Beatte, just south of the city of Johnstown, Wednesday evening, where he was visiting. He came from Germany direct to Fort Plain, where he has resided for the past 35 years. Today his remains were taken to Fort Plain, where he will be buried and his funeral will be held. Mr. Minch was the father of the late Conrad Minch of Fort Hunter, and where he has resided for the past year or so. He was remarkably active for one so advanced in years. He has nephews and nieces residing at Fort Hunter.

He was buried on 2 Nov 1895 in Fort Plain Cemetery, Fort Plain, Montgomery, NY.(66) Henry, his son, Martin, and his daughter, Anna, lived in Ft Plain, while, Conrad lived in Mill Point, then later in Ft Hunter (all villages in Montgomery county, NY). There may have been other children.

Although Henry immigrated to America, it appears that his wife did not. Henry is buried in the Fort Plain Cemetery, next to his daughter and her family. There is no sign of his wife having been buried in this cemetery and I have not seen any other records for his wife. Parents: Valentin Muench .

Henry F. Minch
Amsterdam Daily Democrat and Evening Recorder, Amsterdam, Montgomery, NY - 15 Feb 1940

Henry F. Minch, well-known resident of Fort Hunter, died yesterday afternoon at 2:50 o'clock in St. Mary's Hospital, where he had been a patient for five days. He was born in Mill Point May 23, 1864 and had been a resident of Fort Hunter since 1881. For most of his life he was engaged as a hay buyer and shipper, being in business with his father until the latter's death, when Mr. Minch took over the business in his own name. About 15 years ago he lost his eyesight and since led a retired life.

Honorable and upright, Mr. Minch mad many friends through his hones business dealings. Aside from his business interests his principal concern was his home and family. A member of the Fort Hunter Methodist Church, he served for a number of years on the Board of Trustees of that church. He was also a member of the German Benevolent Society of Amsterdam.

His wife, the former Rosia Bobolin, whom he married February 19, 1887, survives, together with six daughters, Mrs. George Miller, Amsterdam, Mrs. Harold Wittemeier and Miss Lydia Minch, Fort Hunter, Mrs. Theron Geesler, Fort Johnson, Mrs. David Roberts, Verona, N.Y., and Mrs. D.B. Scriber, Parish, N.Y.; four sons, Warnick H., Arthur F., Leonard G., Fort Hunter, and Frank W., Tribes Hill; one sister, Mrs. Henry Fink, Fort Hunter; 22 grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Ft. Hunter Funeral Held for Mrs. Fink

FORT HUNTER, Jan 10. - The funeral of Mrs. Isabel Fink was held Thursday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the Ray Johnson home here and 2:30 o'clock at the Methodist Church, the Rev. John C. Richardson, pastor, officiating.

Mrs. Fred Miller sang "The Old Rugged Cross" and "God Will Take Care of You" accompanied by Mrs. Helen Johnson. Among the floral tributes were pieces fromt eh Electronic Laboratory of the General Electric Company, Schenectady, the W.S.C.S. of the Methodist Church, friends and neighbors. The bearers were Fred Miller, Fred Tieman, Henry Becker, Ira Cole, Floyd Dennis and G. H. Quackenbush.

He is described as being 5 foot, 4 inches tall, light hair, light complexion and blue eyes. He moved on 2 Oct 1865 to Fort Plain, Montgomery, NY. The first land record in his name is in 1866 in the village of Fort Plain. He was a shoemaker between 1870 and 1900 in Minden Twp, Montgomery, NY.(25) (50) (38) In an 1891 NYC and Hudson River RR Directory, Martin is listed as a shoemaker with a home at 115 North Main street in Fort Plain. He died on 11 Nov 1901 in Fort Plain, Montgomery, NY.(3) His obituary reads as follows:

Amsterdam Daily Democrat and Evening Recorder, Amsterdam, Montgomery, NY - 13 Nov 1901

Fort Plain - Martin Minch, one of the most highly esteemed residents of this village died at his home on Reid street Tuesday, aged 60 years. Mr. Minch was taken sick Sunday evening with symptoms that indicated pneumonia. Mr. Minch was born in Germany, but has been a resident of this county for a number of years. Deceased was a member of Company E, One Hundred and Fifty third regiment, and served three years of the Civil war. He had been a resident of this village since the close of the war. He was a member of the Methodist church and took an active part in all its meetings. Mr. Minch was a shoemaker by trade and had been employed at the Parr Shoe store for a number of years. Deceased is survived by a widow, one son, Adam L., and one daughter, Annie. The funeral will be held from the Methodist Church Thursday at 2 o'clock, Rev. H. Brown officiating.

His death certificate states that Martin was a 36 year resident in the US and a 36 year resident of Fort Plain. However, this would mean that he came in 1865, and we know that he served in the Civil War starting in 1862. So the immigration date from census records is the better date. The cause of death was "apoplexy".

He was buried on 14 Nov 1901 in Fort Plain Cemetery, Fort Plain, Montgomery, NY.(71) Martin was the executor of his brother Conrad's will. He purchased land in the village of Fort Plain in 1867 and 1870. From Census records, Martin was a shoemaker and was born in Kassel, Hessen, Germany and his wife was born in Wurtenburg. Martin fought for three years in the Civil War. Parents: Heinrich Minch and Anna.

He was married to Barbara Nash on 23 Feb 1865 in Fort Plain, Montgomery, NY.(38) (71) Martin was married while on sick leave by the Methodist minister, Rev. Abram G. Diefendorf. He had sustained a gun shot wound to the head in the battle of Cedar Creek, Va., on 19 Oct 1864. According to his pension papers, this wound caused a "loss of memory and an affliction of the eyes" which affected him the rest of his life. Children were: Adam L. Minch, [unknown] Minch, Anna R. Mrs. Katherine Gerling, widow of Henry Gerling, died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Chris. Thielking, 53 Arnold avenue, Sunday evening at 7:15 o'clock after a brief illness, aged 80 years. She had been a resident of this city since childhood and was married at Albany 60 years ago. Mrs. Gerling is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Chris. Thielking; four sons, Charles of Schenectady, Christian, Edward, and Albert Gerling of this city; also seventeen grandchildren and one great-granddaughter.

Her mother died of consumption (tuberculosis). Her father was a tailor and her mother was a dressmaker. She came to this country when she was eleven. When her sister died she took in Mary's two daughters, while the son Christy was put in a Catholic Orphanage. One of the girls died of "black" scarlet fever while with Katherine. Later the father, John Clemens, married Katherine's cousin, Tracy and took back the children. The boy Christy, later married and lived in Schenectady. Other cousin's of Katherine's were named Albert and Hoffman.

According to verbal history, Katherine and Mary were also named "Kunagunda" and "Kunaveve", respectively. Parents: Myers .
