1 - Lawrence Salem, Mass., Shelter Island, N.Y. He was a glass-blower and farmer. 1639. He was a Freeman at Salem this year. 1639, 4, 24. He and his wife were baptized. 1639, 12, 11. At this date, grants were made by the town to the "glassmen," as follows: 1 acre to Ananias Concklin, and 2 acres each to Lawrence Southwick and Obadiah Holmes, to be added to their former house lots. Other allusions are made to the glassmen and glass houses at Salem; and the land granted to Lawrence Southwick is still called, as it was then, glass house field. 1639, 12, 16. His children John, Josiah, Daniel and Provided, were baptized. 1640, 3, 30. He and William Woodbury were deputed by a general town meeting to have the care of milch cattle and heifers that are like to calve this summer; and such bulls as are necessary for the herd, excluding all other dry cattle. They were to have care of the cattle from April 6th till November 15th ; driving the cattle out when the sun was half an hour high in the morning, and bringing them in when the sun was half an hour high in the afternoon. Their compensation to be (pounds)36; and the owners of three bulls were to go with the herd, were to have 20s. Apiece for the season, for the use of their bulls. 1641, 12. The General Court voted, that if the town of Salem loaned the glassmen (pounds)30, they should be allowed it again out of the next rate; and the glassmen to repay it again " if the works succeed, when they are able." It is supposed that they manufactured the more common glass for domestic use, including the window glass such as was then used, diamond shaped; and perhaps the glass was cast. Pieces have frequently been turned up from the soil where the factory was situated; and specimens are preserved at the Essex Institute at Salem. 1649, 5, 30 Granted to Goodman Southwick, 4 acres; whereof 2 was in recompense for his meadow, spoiled in digging turf fur the new bridge. 1650, 12, 2. Granted a "littlespot of meadow," containing 1/4 of an acre, near his 4 acres. 1565, 7. His wife Cassandra was arrested for absence from worship. 1658, 7, 16 He and his wife and son Josiah were imprisoned at Boston for being Quakers; and kept twenty weeks in prison there. On the date of their imprisonment, a letter signed by these three, and also be Samuel Shattuck and Joshua Buffum, was addressed to the Magistrates, commencing thus: "This to Magistrates at the Court in Salem, Friends: Whereas it was your pleasure to committ us whose names are underwritten to the House of Correction in Boston, although the Lord, the righteous Judge of Heaven and Earth is our witness that we have done nothing worthy of stripes or bonds, and we being committed by your court to be dealt with as the law provides for foreign Quakers, as ye please to term us," etc. They then recite that the season is an important one for those who live by husbandry; and show what their cattle and families may be exposed to, also such as live by trade; and close the letter as follows: "From the house of bondage in Boston, wherein we are made captive by the will of men, although made free by the Son (John 8, 36), In which we quietly rest this 16th day of 5th month, 1658." 1659, 3, 11. The fines of his son Daniel and daughter Provided not having been paid, they were ordered to be sold as slaves, to any of the English planters in Virginia or Barbadoes, but this order was not executed. Lawrence himself and his wife Cassandra and son Josiah, were disposed by bansihment, on pain of death if they returned; and with them were also banished Samuel Shattuck, Nicholas Phelps and Joshua Buffum. Finally, a safe refuge was found for himself and family at Shelter Island (near Long Island N.Y.) and here he and his wife died within three days of each other. Savage fittingly says of the Southwicks: "Much as they might love their native land , the danger from their opiniones , required banishment it seems; with a proviso that they sgould suffer death for return." Surely the danger from their opinions must have been exceeding great, in the view of the Salem authorities, to cause them to use their power in so contemptible and cowardly a manner, on this weak and defenceless family. 1659, 7 ,10. Will, proved 1660, 11, 29. Ex., wife Cassandra. Overseers, William Robinson and Thomas Gardner. Witnesses, Nathaniel Sylvester, Thomas Harris, William Durand. He calls himself "late of Salem in New England, now being at house of Nathaniel Sylvester, on Shelter Island." To wife, all his possessions for life, and then to be divided as follows: To son Daniel, dwelling house at Salem, and all houses, orchards, gardens, etc. Son Josiah to have returned, the lot his father had of him. To son John, the lot next his own. To Daniel Southwick and John Burnell, a meadow at Ipswich River, to be equally divided. To Samuel Burton, 40s. To John Burnell, if he stand faithful in the truth, 2 young steers, and the first mare foal. To Henry Trask, a lot adjoining his orchard, provided that Daniel Southwick may mow a load of hay there, every year. To Mary Trask, my daughter, wife of Henry Trask, (pounds)10. To Deborah Southwick and young Josiah, 50s. each. To Ann Potter, 40s. if she thinks beneficial to her. To Mary Trask, daughter of Henry, one good serge suit of clothes; and to Sarah and Anna Trask, each a suit of clothing. To John Southwick's children, Samuel and Sarah, 30s. each. The rest of estate to be divided equally between son Daniel and daughter Provided; and that part which belongs to husbandry to be in Daniel's portion. Inventory, (pounds)196.

His only son Henry, as testimony showed, was stamped to death by Captain Locker, the blood coming from his mouth and nose; but upon what provocation so severe a penalty was visited on this youth, has not been ascertained. Another child of Mr. Trask came to a violent death, his daughter Sarah being killed by the Indians at Haverhill. 1694, 4, 13. Mary Trask, alias Nichols, appointed administratrix of his estate. The petitioners state, "that whereas there is a small estate left by our said father-in-law Henry Trask, and no person hitherto hath lawfully administered on said estate nor hath any will of the deceased been proved, whereby we know not how to come at our rights, wherefore pray," etc. 1694, 6, 11. Mr. Nichols, by his will, gave his wife Mary one half the farm for life, and a feather bed and cow, and the residue between said wife and my children. His widow signed the following declaration, this year: "Topsfield in the year 1695-6, be it known to all men whom this presents shall come before, that I, Mary Nichols, do attest and say that my son Nichols hath done for his father and mother Nichols in the time of his father's sickness and before and since as much as he could conveniently do for us.
