     OLD PARISH CHURCH c1900
The traditional founder of the Church in Falkirk was St Modan, and the present Old Parish Church, largely built in 1811, is the most recent of a number of churches to occupy this site. Falkirk takes its name from the stone-built church of the eleventh century 'faw' or 'spotted' Kirk. This photograph was taken before most of the gravestones were removed from around the church, Sir John de Graeme's tomb can be seen here and is one of several that are preserved.

Editor's Comments:
While our Richard Smith and Christina Martin family did not live directly in Falkirk, they did live in small communities on the outskirts of Falkirk. Falkirk was the largest nearby city.
