Title: Comments on Parentage
Type: LinkCToFather
Place: Scotland, Stirlingshire
Description:
There has been some question about SMITH, John's parentage. Is he really a son of SMITH, Richard and MARTIN, Christina? His death certificate names his father, SMITH, Richard, as being a soldier. On all previous records he was known as a Labourer. Also, his mother is not named at all, which leaves his mother's name in question. The reasons to believe that SMITH, John is a son of SMITH, Richard and MARTIN, Christina are:
         1) He and his wife, WATSON, Jane, named their first daughter SMITH, Christina and their first son SMITH, Richard.

         2) When SMITH, Joseph Andrew performed baptisms for the dead in the Salt Lake Temple, he claimed he was SMITH, John's nephew, and he named two relatives that are members of SMITH, John's family.

Baptism performed for: John Smith, born: 1822, in Edinburgh, Edinburgh, Scotland, died: 8 Mar 1897, Relation: Neph
Matches SMITH, John, son of SMITH, Richard and MARTIN, Christina.
See the document: Register of Baptisms for the Dead in the Salt Lake Temple, 1913.

Baptism performed for: John Smith, born: 4 July 1893, in Cowdenbeath, Fife, Scotland, died: 6 Nov 1911, Relation: 2 Cousin
Matches SMITH, John, son of SMITH, John and MCDONALD, Jane Crichton, SMITH, John's second cousin.
See the document: Register of Baptisms for the Dead in the Salt Lake Temple, 1913.

Baptism performed for: Jane Watson, born: 12 June 1818 in Falkirk, Stirling, Scotland, died: 6 Jan 1892, Relation: Neph in law
Matches WATSON, Jane, daughter of WATSON, Robert and BAXTER, Mary and wife of SMITH, John.
See the document: Register of Baptisms for the Dead in the Salt Lake Temple, 1913.
