Editor's Comments:
In April of 2003, (Living), (Living), and (Living) visited Morningside, Stirlingshire, Scotland. We met a very nice elderly man that was born, raised, and lived in Morningside and he told us much of the history of the town. When the coal mines were active and jobs were plentiful working in the mines, the town had many inhabitants. However, the town is now a sleepy, small villiage. Many people have moved out to find work elsewhere. We knew from the 1871 census that the PRYOR, John and WATSON, Jane family lived in "Binnies Row" in Morningside so we asked the man if he knew where it was and he took us there. The old miners cottages were built as rows of attached houses with "kitchen, room, kitchen room..." Binnies Row was demolished in the 1920s, and now modern single family homes are being built on the site. This photo shows the original location of Binnies Row. It started just where the closest home now sits on the left hand side and extended down to the third house. The railroad station was just at the top of the street (in the opposite direction of the photo).
