  Events in his life were:

• Working first in Utica NY, where he was employed by the book publisher William Williams. Later he was a partner in Balch, Rawdon & Co of Albany. About 1830 he re-located in New York City and formed Balch & Stiles with Samuel Stiles. ²⁶
