• He was a partner from 1849 to 1850 with Washington M. Root and Prentice Baird in Pittsfield MA as ROOT, CHAFFEE & BAIRD. In 1850, Chaffee opened a branch store in Rutland VT. ¹³

• He worked from circa 1850 to 1880 as a silversmith in Rutland VT
Though he contiued to advertise as a manufacturer of silver goods, he expanded his business into a wide range of fancy goods and later land and lumber.

• He appeared on the 1880 census taken at Rutland VT, listed as a lumber dealer.

Frederick married Charlotte Thrall on 31 Oct 1850 in Rutland VT. (Charlotte Thrall was born on 12 Apr 1832 in Rutland VT and died on 19 Apr 1894 in Rutland VT.)
