Events in his life were:
- He worked from 1822 to 1849 as a silversmith and jeweler in Taunton MA opened a jewelry store at 3 Merchant's Row. Later located on Fayette Street and then at 37 School Street. 3
- He was a partner from May 1824 to 28 Feb 1829 with William Ware Crossman in Taunton MA as BABBITT, CROSSMAN & Co. 3
- Advertised in the Taunton Free Press (Taunton MA), 7 May 1824, the firm of BABBITT, CROSSMAN & Co. "engaged in Gold and Silversmiths business." 3
- Did experimental work with britannia ware and pewter. Granted a patent on an antifriction journal box made of this metal in 1839 and received $20,000 award from Congress in 1841. After dissolution of BABBITT, CROSSMAN & Co., Babbitt remained as plant superintendent of the re-formed firm of CROSSMAN, WEST & LEONARD. He left the company in 1833 and went with South Boston Iron Works. The above and other partnerships were forerunners of the present firm of Reed and Barton of Taunton. 3
