General notes: Silversmith Events in his life were:
• Alternate Mark • Active in Revolutionary War; served aboard a privateer, and was a member of Capt. Phineas Bradley's company during the British invasion of New Haven in 1779. Commenced silversmith business after the War. 3
• Tea set, c 1787-1802 • Advertised in the Connecticut Journal, 1787-1825, listing a variety of articles for sale: swords, epaulets, belts, watches, razors, pen knives, pencils, some silver-mounted spectacles "suited to any sight," compasses, etc. and of particular interest, silver candlesticks, table, tea, cream, dessert and salt spoons, sugar tongs, gold beads, and earrings of their own manufacture. 3 • Master to Bethuel Tuttle abt 1792 in New Haven CT. 1 • Advertised in the Connecticut Journal, 1794, "for one or two ingenious, steady lads about 14 years as apprentices to silversmith trade." 3 • He worked from 1797 to 1802 as a silversmith in New Haven CT shop located on State Street, two doors south of Mr. Nicoll's crockery store. 4 • Master to Zebul Bradley 1802-1806 in New Haven CT. 4 • He was a partner in 1802 with Bethuel Tuttle in New Haven CT as MERRIMAN & TUTTLE 4
• He was a partner from 1813 to 1817 with Zebul Bradley in New Haven CT as MARCUS MERRIMAN & Co. 4

• Alternate Mark atrributed to MERRIMAN & BRADLEY Marcus married Sally B. Parmelee on 13 Nov 1783 in New Haven CT. (Sally B. Parmelee was born on 21 Dec 1766 in New Haven CT and died on 16 May 1793.) Marcus next married Susanna Bonticou, daughter of Timothy Bonticou and Susan Gordon, on 1 Dec 1793 in New Haven CT. (Susanna Bonticou was born in 1775 in Wallingford CT, died on 11 Jan 1807 in New Haven CT and was buried in New Haven CT.) Marcus next married Lydia Wilcox on 22 Dec 1807 in New Haven CT. (Lydia Wilcox was born in 1766 in Killingworth CT and died on 5 Feb 1822 in New Haven CT.) Marcus next married Betty Huntington on 29 Nov 1822 in New Haven CT. |
