Events in his life were:

- Fled with parents when British threatened destruction of father's house. Family moved to Westfield, Massachusetts for ten years. Returned and settled in Providence. Apprenticed to John Gibbs at shop on Westminster and Exchange Streets. His great grandson, a Deerfield, Massachusetts resident claims that Jenckes was also a pupil of Paul Revere. After Gibbs' death in 1798 Jenckes and Gibbs' widow carried on jewelry business JENCKES & CO until 1800. Member of the Mechanics Association; a Deacon of the First Congregational Church and a founder of Westminster Congregational Church. After 1800 he continued silver and jewelry business as JOHN JENCKES & Co. at stand opposite Turk's Head; for a time in partnership with Manney Jastram on Exchange St. and from 1824, for many years, on his own estate on Friendship St. By an act of Rhode Island Legislature permitted to adopt middle name of Charles. 3
- He was a partner from 1797 to 1800 with Elizabeth Gibbs in Providence RI as JENKES & Co. The Impartial Observer (Sept. 1, 1800) and the U. S. Observer (Sept. 18, 1800) reported the partnership of John Gibbs' former apprentice, John C. Jenckes, and Gibb's widow, Elizabeth. The firm was dissolved on 01 Aug 1800. 3
- He worked from circa 1800 to 1850 as a silversmith and jeweler in Providence RI
Listed in the 1824 and 1836 city directories as a jeweler with a shop on Friendship Street.
- He appeared on the 1850 census taken at Providence RI, listed as a jeweler.
John married Sarah Snow on 22 Mar 1801 in Providence RI. (Sarah Snow was born on 25 Oct 1780 in Providence RI and died on 8 May 1817.)
