John Athan Waite
General notes: Silversmith Events in his life were: • Apprenticed about 1755 to Samuel Casey in South Kingston RI 1 • He worked from circa 1762 to 1817 as a silversmith, locksmith and engraver in South Kingston RI from a shop in the basement of his house. Made the escutcheons and devices for engraving first paper money for RI in which the "State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantation" replaced the former term, "Colony of Rhode Island." 3
• Tongs, c 1765 • Appointed from 1776 to 1799 as Captain of Kingston Reds in South Kingston RI 3 • Appointed from 1796 to 1799 as Justice of the Court of Common Pleas in South Kingston RI 3 • Obituary printed in the Providence Gazette and Newport Mercury (South Kingston RI) on 8 Nov 1817 3 John married Margaret Sheffield on 13 Sep 1767 in Wickford RI. (Margaret Sheffield was born about 1746 in Kingston RI.) |
