• He worked c 1817 as a silversmith in , Oneida NY making and selling trade silver among the Onedia tribes. Fluent in their languages and trusted, he acquired a large track of their land, became wealthy from its sale, and ended up a respected judge.

James married Esther Cornelia Norton on 9 Feb 1818. (Esther Cornelia Norton was born on 18 Oct 1792 in Salisbury CT and died on 8 Apr 1837 in Utica NY.)
