• He worked from circa 1844 to 1848 as a pewtersmith in New York City NY for the firm of SIMPSON & BENHAM. He later took up the dry goods trade in a variety of locations, eventually ending up back in Meriden, having made a considerable fortune.

John married Wealthy Sage Merwin on 5 Dec 1858 in Meriden CT. (Wealthy Sage Merwin was born on 24 Nov 1828 in Durham CT.)
