• Apprenticed on 7 Apr 1832 to Luke Frazer Newland in Albany NY
  

• He worked from circa 1836 to 1841 as a jeweler in Vicksburg, Warren, MS
  After selling his business, he moved to St. Louis, where he agreed to join a group traveling overland to California. Arriving in the state in November, 1841, he settled in San Jose and became a prosperous general goods merchant and financier.
