Joseph Carpenter
General notes: Silversmith Events in his life were: • He worked in 1768 as a silversmith in Norwich CT in shop belonging to his stepfather, Joseph Peck. 3
• Norwich CT, 1772: purchased various construction materials, presumably for building on land rented from church at 71 East Town Street. His shop was said to have occupied one side of building; his brother Gardner's mercantile business the other. The building, now a museum, still houses Carpenter's silversmith shop, one of few surviving. Built a house next to his shop in 1775. 3 • Appointed Postmaster in Norwich CT. 3 • Master to Roswell Huntington abt 1776 in Norwich CT. 1 • Advertised in 1776 (Norwich CT), offering engravings of "four different views of Battles of Lexington, Concord, &c., copied from original Paintings taken on the Spot . . . six shillings per set for the plain engravings and eight shillings for the colored ones." 3 • Master to Rufus Farnum abt 1779 in Norwich CT. 1 • Master to Henry Farnum abt 1786 in Norwich CT. 1
• Sugar bowl, c 1790 • Master to Charles Augustus Carpenter abt 1796 in Norwich CT. 1 • He was a partner c 1800 with Charles Augustus Carpenter in Norwich CT based on pieces bearing marks of both father and son. 4 Joseph married Eunice Fitch on 29 Jun 1775 in Woodstock CT. (Eunice Fitch was born on 17 Apr 1755 in Norwich CT and died in 1797.) |
