General notes: Silversmith and jeweler Events in his life were: • He worked from 1835 to 1846 as a silversmith and jeweler in Milledgeville GA in the shop of his brother Otis. He had walked alone, at age 15, from Springfield to learn the jewelry and watchmaking business with him. 12 • He worked from 1846 to 1847 as a silversmith and jeweler in Athens GA managing his brother's second store. 12 • He was a partner from 1847 to 1861 with Otis Childs in Athens GA as O. & A. K. CHILDS. The firm was discontinued at the outbreak of the Civil War and not resumed afterwards. Returning from service, Asaph went into the hardware business and was involved in banking and real estate in Athens. 12 • He appeared on the 1880 census taken at Athens GA, listed as a merchant. |
