Suffering from ill health, he cut short his training and returned home and eventually became a carpenter.

Charles married Jane Elmendorf on 10 Sep 1828 in Bethlehem NY. (Jane Elmendorf was born on 22 Nov 1809, died on 26 Jan 1845 and was buried in Nicoll-Sill Cemetery Cedar Hill Albany NY.)
