Shirley writes: "Mehitable McKy and Samuel Buck, parents of Samuel Miles Buck, don't know his wife's name, just that he was born in 1777 and married in 1803, died about 1856. He was one of the children Mehitable brought from Sorel, Quebec to Ontario after Samuel's death. I have all the papers documenting the land grants they applied for from the King of England, and were granted. Anyway, he was the father of Stephen Walker Buck, born 1803 Edwardsburgh, Ontario, married 14 Jul 1825 to Catherine Kingsland who was born in Johnstown, Fulton, New York and has been a wonderfully fun line to follow. They both died in Edwardsburgh, Grenville, Ontario. Their son that is on my line is George Stirton Buck, born 1845 (Apr 10) and he is the one who emmigrated back to the U.S. His son is Stephen Walkley Buck born 29 May 1876 in Lost Nation, Clinton, Iowa, and married Jennie Belle Welsh in 1900. They homesteaded in Flathead valley near Kalispell, montana, where my dad, George Edward Buck was born 1902. Hope all this clears up to you who I am. I also have tons on the Bucks backwards, back to James Buck, 1555." |

Also in that census was Benjamin MCKAY, my gg grandfather, and his
brother Lafayette MCKAY.
It turned out, that Simeon's son, Benjamin, never lived in Venango
County, but moved on to Iowa, and eventually on to Colorado.
My Benjamin's father appears to be a David MCKAY, that lived in the
same neighborhood as Medad MCKAY and Seth MCKAY (two of Alexander's sons),
in the Niagara area of New York. I believe they are all in the 1830 census
of the Niagara area. This David was born about 1790-1805, and married a
Charlotte SHERWOOD, who was born in Canada.
We do not know for sure if David was born in New York, Canada, or
Scotland.
I believe that he was an illegitimate son of Medad MCKAY.
He is not in the James Adolphus McKay Genealogy.
Because these two families seemed to always be in the same places
at the same times, I have stayed close to this list, looking for any
connection. In the obituary of Lafayette MCKAY, he said that his
grandfather's name was Richard.
If that be true, I might be looking for a Richard, rather than a
David. Benjamin's
obituary, and that of his sister Fannie Matilda McKay SALSGIVER, refer to
him as David. |

Because they were Loyalists they moved to Canada settling first in Sorel, Quebec where Samuel was killed in a skirmish while in the militia and later in Upper Canada or what is now the province of Ontario. They settled in the small community of South Mountain which is about 40 miles south of our national capital, Ottawa. Asenath BUCK , the eldest daughter married John BALDWIN of South Mountain in 1801. They had a son John who had a son Thomas who had a daughter Lillian who married Dr. W.F. MITCHELL and they had me.
