After the family was free from this incident they stayed a short time with an Aunt, then they lived in a school (?), and then they went to live in a Dutch Settlement of rich farmers where they found better circumstances to live in. Per Wadsworth family records, Alexander McKAY was born 19 Feb 1731 in Old Hadley, MA and died 17 Jun 1812. He is believed to have died in or near Skaneateles, Onondaga County, NY and buried in the Spafford Cemetery [Onondaga County, NY]. (Note: We were told that he Old Hadley, MA records were destroyed in a flood many years ago.) Per "Spafford Mortuary Records with Genealogical Notes", published, 1917, by the Onondaga County, NY Genealogical Society, Alexander McKAY is reportedly buried in the Spafford Cemetery, that he was born 19 Feb 1732, died in 1812, was a son of Elkanah McKAY, who family tradition says, was born in Edinburgh, Scotland ca 1700. TRADITION: FAMILY TRADITION and several other secondary sources, including the book "Genealogy of the McKay Family Descendants of Elkenny McKay the founder of the family in America" written and published by Dr. James Adolphus McKay in 1896 (FHL Book 929.273 A1 #2884), show that Alexander McKAY is the only son of Elkenny or Elkanah McKAY and names seven others as Alexander's sisters. Comments by Blanche McKAY, "Alexander and Mary SACKETT were married in Amenia, NY 2 Sep 1760 per Presbyterian Church Records". Notes for Mary SACKETT BIRTH: Mary's father has been listed as both Capt. James SACKETT a physician of Albany, NY (in what is now in Amenia, Dutchess, NY) and also as Richard SACKETT. Birth date and place came from Family Bible Record found in the "Detroit Society for Genealogical Research Magazine" Vol. 11 pg. 26 The Ancestral File entry for Mary SACKETT gave her birth date as 17 Nov 1738 (see AFN: J34LZM) Information from the pedigree of Cary WILLIAMS gives Mary SACKETT'S birth as 2 Sep 1739 in Amenia, Dutchess, NY (the daughter of John SACKETT III and Elizabeth ). Information from John McKAY gives Mary's birth date as 17 Apr 1743. MARR: Marriage Records of Amenia, Dutchess County, NY as published in The New York Genealogical and Biographical Record, Vol. 33, Page 46. DEATH: Death date come from Bible Record noted in birth above. MIGRATION: Warren, Connecticut Church of Christ (FHL Film 5949) "Names of persons admitted 28 May 1781 Mary the wife of Alexander McKAY recommended from the Church in Lenox." LAND: There is a land deed dated 16 Feb 1760 in which Marey SACKETT, Reubon SACKETT, David FINNEY and John FINNEY all of Kent trade some Kent land for another parcel of Kent land with a Nathaniel FINNEY of Providence, Providence RI. We do knot know how or if they fit in so we have noted them here for further study. We suspect the Marey is really a FINNEY and that Reubon is her husband and that his transaction has something to do with settling a FINNEY estate. NOTE: The book "The Sacketts of America their Ancestors and Descendants 1630 1907" gives five more generations of Mary's SACKETT ancestry. Mary is entry 721 on page 112 and it extends from there. He married on 13 Sep 1782 in Washington, Litchfield, CT Elizabeth BOSTWICK , born 28 Jan 1761 in Merryall School District,,CT, daughter of Ebenezer BOSTWICK and Elizabeth TAYLOR . Notes for Sylvester MCKAY BIRTH: Birth date was previously given as 2 Apr 1759 as it was taken from the book "The American McKays" by James A. McKay, written in 1896. No source was given for this date and it is believed to be incorrect in light of the christening record found and his parents marriage date (previous birth place was Albany, Albany, NY) Current Birth date taken from Family Bible Record as found in the "Detroit Society for Genealogical Research Magazine" Vol. 11 pg. 26 it indicates that Sylvester was the oldest son and was born on 2 Aug 1761 at Oblong, Dutchess, NY. It also adds that he died at Union, Chenango, NY on 2 Apr 1804. CHR: Church Records of Amenia, Dutches, NY as listed in The New York Genealogical and Biographical Record. Vol. 33, Page 109. MARR: "Weekly Scotsman" dated 11 May 1961 indicates that Sylvester MCKAY married Elizabeth BOSTWICK in Mansfield, NY and that they had a total of six sons and three daughters. DEATH: Death date and place taken from a Family Bible Record as found in the "Detroit Society for Genealogical Research Magazine" Vol. 11 pg. 26. NOTE: The place name Mansfield, NY is given in connection with Sylvester's first son Silas. I am not sure if it refers to his birth 1783 or his death in 1843. Mansfield today is in Cattaraugus County, NY which was not created until 1808 so I suspect the place name refers to his death.
