Beard Family History

Almeria Clarke BEARD was born 30 Nov 1848 in St. Christopher, British West Indies.  She was the daughter of William Daniel BEARD and Mary Anne Mardenbough WATTLEY.  She married John Hamilton THOM on 8 Aug 1867.  He was born in Scotland in 1840 and died 30 Jul 1882 (probably in West Indies.)  They had six children, Mary Ellen Margaret THOM, baptised 8 May 1871, John Augustus THOM, baptised 12 Jul 1872, William Anderson THOM, baptised 9 Dec 1874, Charles Arthur Hamilton THOM, baptised 21 Sep 1876, Lilian Alice THOM, born 6 Aug 1878, baptised 2 Oct 1878, m. Henry Edmund Field DONNELLY and Elma (Emma or Elmira) Augusta Halman THOM baptised 26 Dec 1881, m. Augustus SCHUMACHER and died near Westwood, New Jersey.  These six children were probably all born in St. George Parish (Basseterre), Island of St. Christopher (St. Kitts), British West Indies.  Almeria died in a fire sometime around 1883.  The children were raised by Almeria Clarke BEARD's sister Mary Selena (BEARD) CLUKIES.

Mary Selena BEARD  appears on the American Immigrant Wall of Honor at Ellis Island.  Also appearing is an entry for The CLUKIES and BEARD families and one, Francis Oliver CLUKIES.  Prior to discovering this information, the family history was: a.) CLUKIES was a family name; b.) Lilian Alice THOM, lived with the Francis Oliver CLUKIES' family in Brooklyn, New York in 1907, per a post card from the West Indies, addressed to Alice THOM in-care-of Francis CLUKIES; and, c.) our grandmother, Lilian Alice THOM was raised by her Aunt Marie.
These facts lead us to believe that Mary Selina (
BEARD) CLUKIES' name was pronounced as Marie, by the family.  Mary Selena BEARD married Robert Smith CLUKIES.

William Daniel [Dr] BEARD was born in 1813, probably in the West Indies.  He married Mary Anne Mardenbough WATTLEY . She was born in 1823, probably in the West Indies.  She was the daughter of Joseph King WATTLEY, Cheif Judge of Nevis, in the West Indies.   They had 12 children.

Additional family notes:
Lilian and Elma, children 5 and 6 were both nurses and took care of the
CLUKIES brothers, Edwin Mortimer and Alfred Ernest in their final illnesses.  Both died in their early twenties in New York City.   They were the sons of Robert Smith CLUKIES and Mary Selena BEARD
Notes by Joan
CLUKIES PUCKETT
All
THOM children are cousins to my grandfather, Sidney Barker CLUKIES.   The two remaining brothers, Francis Oliver CLUKIES and their father, Robert Smith CLUKIES and mother, Mary emigrated  to New York City early 1890's with their 4 sons (Edwin, Alfred, Sidney and Francis).  Sidney's daughter, Elma CLUKIES, named after Elma THOM who was known in the family as "Numinum" because young Elma couldn't say the name right.  In her elderly years, Elma THOM SCHUMACHER lived near her namesake in Westwood, New Jersey and died there, as she had no other family (no children/Lilian had died and never married/other siblings either still living in St. Kitts or also presumed dead)   Additional family information @ LDS/SPR
