He died on 5 Apr 1924 in Randolph County, Ga. He was buried in MK Hebron, Randolph County, Ga.

The subject of this sketch was the third child by his first marriage, and lived at home with his parents until 1862, when he enlisted for the war in Company H, Fifty-first Georgia regiment, under command of Gen. Sims. He saw a great deal of fighting from the first to the last of the war, and participated in the following battles: Seven Pines, second Manassas, Fredericksburg, Harper's Ferry, Gettysburg, Knoxville, the battle of the Wilderness, and all the fighting around Richmond. He then proceeded to Appomattox, and was there at the surrender. He was taken prisoner in the battle of Gettysburg and sent to Fort Delaware, where he was kept for thirty days and then exchanged. In the battle of the Wilderness he was shot through the foot, and at Chancellorsville a spent ball struck him under the right eye, severely injuring him. At the surrender Mr. Stevens was one of only three of Company H that was left of the company, the others having been killed, wounded or taken prisoner during the war. He returned to his home, walking over one hundred miles of the way, and commenced farming on the old place. In 1867 he was married to Miss Watson, born in February, 1842, in Stewart county.

Mr. and Mrs. Stevens have had born to them two children: Sarah Lenia, wife of Mr. Mack Kenney, who lives on the home place, and Mary May, born Oct. 11, 1870, and died Oct. 21, 1879. Mrs. McKinney has three children. Mrs. Stevens and her daughter are members of the Baptist church. Mr. Stevens is a stanch democrat in politics. They live on a fine farm about nine miles south of Cuthbert

Bio from Houston Co GA genweb site:
"JOHN THOMAS STEVENS, planter, Cuthbert, Randolph county, was born in 1845, in this county. He is a grandson of Stephen Stevens, a native of South Carolina, born near Charleston, who, with his family, consisting of wife, four sons and two daughters, migrated overland to Georgia in 1826, and settled in Houston county, being among the first settlers of that county. He was a farmer, a democrat in politics and a sincere member of the Primitive Baptist church, in which faith he triumphantly died. His wife survived him a few years. They raised six children: James, who moved to Mississippi just previous to the war; Luke located in Mississippi; Thomas, who settled in Stewart county, where he died; Julia A., who married a Mr. Edward Smith and settled in Alabama, where she is yet living; Erliffa, who died single, in Georgia, and Burrell. The last named was the youngest child of Stephen Stevens, and was born in South Carolina, Jan. 23, 1814. He grew to manhood in Houston county and received a very good education. He married Sarah Shivers, who was born July 30, 1818, in Houston county. She was the daughter of Jack Shivers, a native of South Carolina, and one of the early settlers of Houston county, who lived to an old age. For a while he resided in Terrell county, but later moved back to Houston county, where he died. He had four children: Eli, Allie, Sarah, and Sadie, all deceased. ..."

James, Seeing your last name sparked a familiarity with me. I have been researching my mother's family the Grizzard's from VA. Some of them migrated into Davidson Co., TN and I have a couple of Grizzard's that married into your Shivers. I have done a little bit on these two families just to show the relationship with the Grizzard's. I would be glad to send you the info if you are interested in see it. (Most of it comes from census, marriage and burial records online) One was
Alexander Giles Shiver Jr. who married Mary Grizzard The other was
Sarah J. Shivers, daughter of John McCasland who married Thomas Tillar Grizzard. Sandra

MINUTES OF THE ANNUAL CONFERENCES OF THE METHODIST EPISCOPAL
CHURCH SOUTH, 1896. Nashville, TN: Publishing House of the
Methodist Episcopal Church South, 1896. Page 159-160.
"Thomas Banister Malone, son of Jordan A. and Lettia Andrews
Malone, was born in Williamson county, Tennessee, November 27,
1852, and died of pneumonia at West Point, Mississippi,
March 10, 1896. He received his education in the Franklin
(Tennessee) High School; was converted August 12, 1866 at
Mt. Carmel, a Cumberland Presbyteian church in Williamson
county, Tennessee; licensed to preach by the Quarterly
Converence of Franklin Station, August 16, 1873; admitted on
trial into the Tennessee Conference at Columbia, October 9,
1876; received into full connection at Clarksville,
October 13, 1878, and ordained deacon by Bishop Kavanaugh;
transferred to the North Mississippi Converence, October,
1879, and ordained elder at Columbus, December 1880, by
Bishop Paine. He was married to Miss Lizzetta C. Shivers,
at Goodlettsville, Tennessee, September 22, 1880. Brother
Malone served the following charges: 1878, Forrest Grove
Mission; 1879, Gallatin Circuit; 1880, Austin, North
Mississippi Conference; 1881-82, Deer Creek Circuit; 1883-
84, Senatobia; 1885, Corinth; 1886, Winona; 1887-90,
Crawford Circuit; 1891-92, Ripley and New Albany; 1893-94,
Grenada; 1895-96, West Point. This is a brief record of
his twenty-one years of itinerant life. Brother Malone
was a delicate man when he joined the Conference and his
reception was opposed by some very influential members
on the ground that he would break down in a little while
and be left a charge on the Conference. But he developed
into a strong man, and after twenty years of hard work
was a stronger man than when he entered....For a number
of years he edited our Conference journal, and as to how
well it was done his work speaks for itself....When told
by his loving wife that he must soon leave them, he said:
"It's all right. You and the children will come on."
When his sisters Eva and Sallie came he said to them:
"It's all right. It's all right." He was too weak to talk
much; gave a few directions about some private matters, and
peacefully died. We buried him in the beautiful cemetery
at West Point by the side of brother Babb, who died pastor
of the church nineteen years before. He requested to be
buried with the people of his own charge."

From Paul Hosse in Feb 2002.

As an interesting aside, family lore has it that Carrie was "dis-owned". Seems they were Catholic and the Hosses were Luthern. Don't know how true that is but only Mary had anything to do with Carrie. Mary is buried in the Hosse family plot in Mt. Olivet in
Nashville. As a young girl, Carrie worked at some various tavern along Nashville's famious (or infamious) Cherry Street, so that may be the reason as well. The Hosses and Gusmanns owned serveral taverns. I think that's were Carrie and Fred must have met.

From Paul Hosse in May 2005
Wow. I'm impressed. Guess "howdy cousin" is in order! My greatgrandmother, Caroline "Carrie" Shivers was from Nashville, TN. She was born in 1867. Her mom ran a boarding house. She was "disowned" by her family, in part, for marrying a Lutheran...Fredrick Albert Hosse, my great grandfather. Carrie herself became quite "famous" in Nashville and here in Louisville after his death in 1907. She used to talk about her "brother" being an officer in the CSA in either LA or Texas. She also talked about--and to--a cousin, Governor Allan Shivers in Texas. Carrie used to say that the family was German; from the Alsae-Lorrine region (could be French I guess, depending on who controlled it that week). So, where were did they come from?
Paul Hosse

Hi Jim. Don't really have much from Carrie per se. A few pics, cards, dice, etc that she had. Carrie, and her sons were pretty colorful as they say. If you're from Nashville, I'm sure you know the name Hosse. My great great grandfather, Ferdinand Albert (called Albert) Hosse owned a gunsmithing shop, which later became a lock and key business. Carrie, starting around 1910, ran several "sporting houses" in Nashville and here in Louisville until shortly before her death in 1954. There has been a few articles written about her activites, as well as her sons (including my grandfather) during Prohibition and after. One of them was Uncle Scutter (Manulius Slyvester Hosse) was perhaps Nashville's best known bootlegger. I have the dates and names of her family. It's just a matter of remembering where all the paperwork is at! I'l be happy to dig it out and get it to you.
Carrie, whose full name was Caroline, used to mention Governor Shivers in Texas. Said she had met him a number of times, as did my grandfather. Her mom ran a boarding house. Carrie was "disowned by the family for a number of reasons, including marrying a Lutheran rather than a Catholic (I think that may have been the least of it LOL). The only person who had much to do with her was a sister named Margaret (who was sometimes called "Maggie").
So tell me, where did the Shivers orginiate from? Carrie said they were German--from the Alsae-Lorraine region. I guess, depending on the day of the week, they could have been considered French too. Any idea how they ended up in Nashville?
Thanks!
Paul Hosse
