I think you might find your missing links in NC, especially around Wake County as that is where I think the "Split" took place. I know that is where one of my legs split, the Segraves. One leg came down into Georgia and another went west and north. We have nicknamed that leg, the "wanderer" as he seemed to move from place to place and had over a dozen children.I have been told that there is a Shivers reunion in Pike County this summer. I don't know the dates but I am going to email a friend in Pike and see if he knows anything about it. My sister says she thinks it is in August. This fall I am meeting some friend in Virginia at Cedar Creek, the battlefield and when I am done there, I am thinking about going over to the Isle and see what I can find. I have not been able to find any hard proof in the books that I have looked in but I have been told that they have a pretty genealogy research site there, so maybe I will get lucky. Oh yes, Cedar Creek is where John Wilson Shivers was wounded the second time and captured. He was sent to Point Lookout, MD and was released in June of 1865. At the same time, two of his uncles were also there, so we had 3 that I know of in Point Lookout.

The Fredericksburg, Virginia, newspaper THE DAILY STAR of 29 July 1922 has an article titled "From a Ga. Veteran: He Writes of Some of His Experiences Nearly Sixty Years Ago" (p. 1). The article is a letter from J. Wilson Shivers of Brooks, Georgia. It is datelined "Brooks, Ga., July 26, 1922" and addressed "To The Daily Star." It says this: "In my morning's mail there happened to be a copy of your valuable paper. I don't know who sent it. I am an old wounded Confederate and was near your town during the second battle of Fredericksburg, but not in the town. I was in Virginia four years and participated in sixteen battles fought during the war. I love Virginia and her people, especially the women. My people were descendants of Virginians. Some of my Co., Co. A, 13th Ga. Regt., were killed in the first battle of Fredericksburg -- the bloodiest single day's battle we fought was at Sharpsburg, Md. Our loss was very heavy. Our colonel and adjutant were both killed and ! nearly all the commissioned officers were killed or wounded. My Co., A, 13th Ga., went in with 33 men. Ten were killed and 21 wounded. Only two got out. The writer was severely wounded. The man on my right was shot through the heart and the one on my left had his brains shot out. [paragraph] I see some thing in your paper about Winchester. My Co. fought four battles there and four in the vicinity of Winchester, Harper's Ferry, Cedar Creek, Fisher's Hill and Charlestown, W. Virginia. Our greatest loss was on September 19th, 1864, when the gallant Gen. Rhodes was killed. [paragraph] I wrote to the P. M. of Woodstock, Va., concerning the tree spring near there, where the clear, cool water gushes from a hole in the tree some 5 or 6 feet from the ground. Some who had not seen it did not think it was there. He wrote me that it still gushed its cool water and he had drank from it. He published my letter and sent me two copies of the Woodstock paper. [paragraph] The v! alley of Virginia is a beautiful country and contains fine people. [paragraph] The 13th Georgia was on picket at Fredericksburg the night the Yankees crossed for the second battle there. I was not with them. I had not gotten well of the wound I received at Sharpsburg, so I was detailed as cook. [paragraph] I am sending you a subscription, as I want to see something more of old Virginia. I am an wounded Confederate in my 78th year. J. Wilson Shivers, Box 100, Brooks, Ga."
