Shivers Family Legends
    Shadrick W Shivers
    b. Aug 24 1824 ?
    d. 1878-1911

Born in either Isle of Wight NC or Pitt County NC to James Marklin Shivers on Sept 24 1824. The exact date and location has yet to be determined but based on the date of his birth it could even have been in Pitt County NC just prior to the migration to Tennessee. Shadrick shows up in 1842 in the probate records of Benjamin Shivers and 1844 with his marriage to Louisa Redditt. Shadrick used his 1st cousin Roderick James Powell Shivers to sign the security bond which i believe was a part of his inheritance monies. They were married in Shelby County, Tn on Sept 24 1844 and this looks to have been near his 20th birthday and so the birthdate was derived. This also would be a reason for the guardian changeover and report that happened the following week. Shadrick shows up as a member of the Raleigh Eqypt Baptist Church with various other family members and is listed as a administrator of the church. Shadrick show up in the 1850 Census with his wife Louise and one son Roderick T Shivers in the Raleigh District. In 1851 we found where Shadrick deed's to William Shivers of Pitt County land in Pitt County and i believe this to be a part of the land Sarah Elks left to Benjamin Shivers and family. This William Shivers would be the same family that currently lives on the Shivers family land in Winterville, Nc. I next find Shadrick in various locations and also dating other women around 1852 in Tippah County, Ms as listed in the diaries of James and Charles Terry. We also find him in the History of Point Township Ark between 1852 and 1854 and this is probably related to the large Redditt farms he possibly was helping to manage for his father in law or for the Gregory family that married his sister. He is listed in 1853 on probate records with Tillman Gregory together receiving goods from the estate and most likely helped to return to Arkansas with them. Shadrick seems to disappear for a couple of years and then resurfaces when he joins the Civilwar at the Germantown Depot.

Shadrick W Shivers joined the 51st Tn Inf Company C and was captured at Fort Donalson and imprisoned at Camp Douglas in IL. He was there and exchanged at Vicksburg and again disappears until the 1865 Slave Census of Shelby County, Tn where he shows up a slave owner with 12 slaves. After this we can only find a single references in 1870 in the NC marriage index and 1878 in Maryland where SW Shivers shows up as a carpenter which is the trade his son Roderick T Shivers continued. The burial location of Shadrick has not been located and all efforts are currently directed towards finding his gravesite to place his CSA tombstone as he rightly deserves. ** Update 2005 ** Family of Solomon Pitt Shivers is identical and now looks as though Shadrick from Pitt County was later known as Solomon Pitt Shivers and was buried in Alabama. This is totally possible and is also found in my mothers line.
