Roderick Theophilus Shivers

Born in Raleigh, Shelby County TN to Shadrick W Shivers
on Nov 3 1849 and he died on Feb 8 1907. Roderick was the owner of
Shivers Construction Company based in Memphis, Shelby County, Tn. Builder of
many fine early Shelby County Houses along the Wolf River corridor from
Raleigh, Shelby County, Tn to Memphis, Shelby County ,Tn and various
commercial structures including parts of the Dupont and Kimberly Clark
factories. Many barns and other structures were built by Shivers
Construction Company and we are still looking for information on the permits
pulled for all Shivers Construction buildings. Roderick married sisters Ella
F King and after her death he married Olivia M King on Jun 17 1876. Ella was
born on Sep 2 1849 and died on Oct 23 1872 and according to the History of
Raleigh, Tn she is buried in the Old Raleigh Cemetery. Olivia was born on Oct
1858 and died on Feb 24 1912. Olivia and Roderick are buried in the Midtown
- Forrest Hill Cemetery. Roderick and Olivia had 4 children, all sons that we have
located, Mell T, Lee Roy, Harry F, Rufus W. Shivers.
Melvin Theophilus and Lee Roy are both buried at Forrest Hill midtown with Roderick and Olivia.
Harry is buried at Calvary Cemetery next to Forrest Hill and Rufus W is buried at
Memorial Cemetery on Poplar Ave east in Memphis. Roderick has
been located on the 1850 Census with Shadrick W Shivers and Louise Redditt.
I have not located Roderick on the 1860 Census but it is believed he may
have been in Arkansas growing up on one of the Redditt or Gregory farms in
Point Township, Augusta Ark. We next find Roderick on the 1870 census living
with William R Redditt his uncle. It is unclear why Roderick is living with
his uncle and until we locate Shadrick's tombstone or death information we
may never find out. We later find Roderick in the 1900 Shelby County Census
with his family of 4 boys.
