APPLETON/NEWBERRY/WOLCOTT
These families came from England in the early
1600s and became prominent settlers in Massachusetts and
Connecticut. Eventually the lines merged when Sarah Newberry married Henry
Wolcott, Jr. and Judith
Appleton married Samuel Wolcott, son of Henry, Jr.
APPLETON
The Appletons migrated to America when Samuel
(1586-1670) came to Ipswich, MA in 1635,
with his second wife, Martha, and 6 children ... 5 by his first wife, Judith
Everard, and 1 by his second
wife. He was given land grants in 1638 of 2 tracts in Ipswich. Some of this land
continues to be
held by the family to this day.

WOLCOTT
The Wolcotts were prominent in early England
but came to America to escape religious persecution
after converting to the Puritan faith. Henry, Sr. came with his wife, Elizabeth,
and older children
(including Henry, Jr.) to Massachusetts in 1630 on the ship "Mary and
John". Later they moved to
Windsor, CT where the Wolcotts became leaders in the settlement of that
community. (Note:
Elizabeth's mother, Anne Blake, married Thomas Saunders in 1573. Anne's father
was John Blake)
