Welcome to the

Web Page

of the Descendants of Christian Schick, Sr.
of Pennsylvania and North Carolina.

Our Purpose is to create a database and expand the known names of the descendants of one of Pennsylvania's early settlers, Christian Schick, Sr. This database contains only the surnames SHICK, SCHICK OR SHEEK(S) except when a female descendent married, then her spouse is also included. However, it is not our intent to follow the lines of other than these surnames.

Christian (Schick) Sheek (? - c. 1797) was born in Germany and immigrated to America on the ship Beulah, arriving in Philadelphia, PA Sept. 10, 1753. He settled in Berks Co, PA in the Richmond Township. Tax lists and militia muster rolls show Christian owned properties in Berks Co. and Northampton Co., PA.

Christian Schick and Rosina (?-aft. 1824) [surname unknown] were the parents of eight known children. Christian and his family moved to NC in the 1770's, following the Heidelberg Settlement from PA. Christian's name is among those listed on some of the orginial minutes of the Heidelberg Evangelical Lutheran Church, founded on Dutchman Creek in Davie Co., NC. Christian was listed in the 1778 Rowan Co. tax lists in Capt. Berger's District as Christian Shiek. Land grants show Christian was a property owner in 1784 in the Smith Grove area near the cemetery of Heidelberg Lutheran Church of which he and Rosina were members. Neither Christian or Rosina's burial site are known but speculation is they are in TN/KY near their children's homes.

Of their children, Christian Schick, Jr. stayed in PA and is buried in Northampton Co, PA; many of Christian Jr.'s children migrated to Armstrong County PA and their descendants live there today; George Sheeks settled in Indiana; Maria Sheek Bridgefarmer and Catherine Sheek Turner settled in Wayne Co, KY; David Sheek settled in Obion Co. TN; Johan Adam Sheek remained in NC; and no information is known about Magadalena Sheek and Fridrich Sheek. Johan Adam Sheek and wife Susanna Moulder raised 10 children in NC; all execpt two, Adam Jr. and Mary, lived in the Davie/Yadkin Co. area of NC. Today the 10th generation of Christian Sheek descedants live in Davie County.(1)

The work by Ann Ellis Sheek, "The History of the Sheek Family 1753-1973", 1973 is expansive in its coverage of the major portion of Christian Schick, Sr.'s descendants who traveled to North Carolina. Those who went to North Carolina used the name(s) Sheek(s). This book is now out of print, but photocopies may be available. In addition, we are indebted for the contributions relating to the families of Jacob Sheek, Daniel Sain Sheek and John Wiley Sheek of Davie Co., NC to B. Zimmerman.

The ground breaking work on the Pennsylvania branch of this family was completed by Clarence R. Shirey and was published in 1984 in his book, "Our Shaffer, Schick, Fuchs (Fox), Reimel, Ferringer Forefathers and Foremothers". We are indebted to Mr. Shirey for his contribution and for his permission to use his data for this catalog of names. While this book is no longer available either, photo copies may be obtained from Mr. Shirey if you are interested.

Other contributions to this file are from the following: Amanda Foringer, Bill Nulph, Fredric Z. Saunders, Joyce Sherry and Larry Shick. Thanks to all of them for their comments and additions.

A word about sources is necessary. All information is believed to be accurate. Facts have been obtained from primary sources such as church records, birth and death notices, cemetery records, courthouse records, oral family histories, family bibles and other sources. Each fact has not been cited in the database, but citations are available for most entries. If you need a source to continue your own research, please contact me.
